OK - so this one perplexes me.
Both terrific fencers, both in college - what did they gain by the Helsinki trip weekend before Thanksgiving - experience, or am I missing sumpm?

I can only speculate but since they are both registered for the Jr. WC in Tauber next weekend, perhaps they felt it worthwhile to go to Europe early to fence in the Helsinki event.

Although it isn't a USFA designated event, they will earn FIE points, which helps with seeding for international events, including the junior championships.

They will probably join cadet fencers, who fenced in Heidenheim, to train at the club in Tauber for the week in between these events.

If their college gives the whole week of Thanksgiving off, they may have missed no school, and in addition to gaining some valuable FIE points by going over early they'll guarantee that they'll not be jet lagged etc for the Tauber JWC.

In 2004 I coached Billy at the junior world cups around Thanksgiving. His highschool was off the whole week of Thanksgiving so he missed almost no school going to Laupheim, GER and Catania, ITA Junior world cups.

Of note the Helsinki Junior world cup is held in a sports center that is a converted nuclear bomb shelter. Hard and strange to find at first. It is next to an elementary school under a field. The entrance is a tiny building about big enough for the two elevator bays which you ride down to get in.

Also with fairly cheap airfare to europe and entry fees of 10 Euros each. It becomes almost cheaper to compete over there than here. Even with the bad exchange rate. Not to mention the training competition available. Especially at Taub. (A truely awesome fencing facility.) Probably the best in the world for Epee.

The results also help with junior world cup points used to seed other junior world cups and the world championships.

To answer this you need an answer to more broader question:

What people are gaining by fencing?

I missed the point of Tauber next weeeknd, also Thanksgiving is kinda sacred in my Family - bigger than X-mas and New Year's combined - sorry, guess I looked from too narrow a perspective.
Thanks to Teacup, KD5MDK, and Dr. White for informative answers - I have never been good at planning multiple tournament trips - this helps.

    touche

I can only imagine 40 of my relatives in a Helsinki bunker, well 39, Aunt Patricia would be foraging for heritage free range turkey.
