    Fencing in Chinese-speaking countries?

    Ni Hao!

I have noticed that there several people here from the Sinophone world, and this post is mostly directed to them.

Anyway, I spend this summer in Shenzhen, southern Guangdong, in my parents-in-law´s place. I saw precious little fencing on TV (except unreal fly-in-the-air stuff) and none in reality. Considering that it is a large city - several million - and one of the wealthiest in PRC, one would expect that if one could find fencing anywhere in PRC, Shenzhen would be a good bet. No such luck. Basketball reigned supreme what I could see. This I find surprising, since the average woman was only somewhat taller than 150 cm, and I with my 174 cm towered as a near-giant. ;-)

I will return to PRC and HK sooner or later, so I wonder if somewhoe could help me with these qustions:

What is the HK/Shenzhen/Guangdong fencing scene like? Number of clubs, number of fencers, how to find clubs, relative weapon popularity, webpages, general info?

Any important info pertaining to fencing in the Chinese-speaking world in general?

Do HK fencers go to SZ or GD in general to compete? The other way around?

    Zaijjien!

I'm not based in the PRC or HKSAR, but here are some possible leads:

On the PRC side, try contacting the Beijing Fenxing Fencing Club -- supposedly some of their former students set up a fencing club in Shenzhen.

    info@fenxing.com.cn

As for the HKSAR, the Hong Kong Amateur Fencing Association website is at:

    http://www.hkafa.org.hk/index.html

There's also a (not very busy) HKU related fencing bboard at

    http://www.hku.hk/fencing/wwwboard/wwwboard.html

Vendors often have good contacts -- "Esun" is a HK fencing equipment retailer. (Which I hope to have a chance to check out the next time I pass through Honkers).

The Macao Amateur Fencing Association doesn't seem to have a web site, however their other contact info can be found listed on:
