Possibly, but how to do that is a perennial problem.

In "the old days" we tried to do it by the different sounds of a sabre blade cutting the air with point vs flat, but we tended to put a lot more force into cuts back then and that made the sounds a bit more perceptible. And we had the whippier pre-S2000 blades as well. ( Though even back then it was tough to differentiate by ear. )

Coatings will just chip off. Composite blades will be too fragile, I suspect.

Is cutting with the flat really that big of an issue? By the way, I don't find sabre incomprehensible either. Sure its fast, but it's not just a glorified rock paper scissors game.

Did I also read right that he wants to bring the fleche back? Why in God's name would that be a good idea? Sorry to the vets, but pre-electrified, cross over-permitted sabre is pretty not fun looking. I really don't think sabre fencers need a cross-over anyway, since they move faster than the other two anyway. What purpose would this return to Kabuki theater serve?

I believe that a return to slower lockout times would not be good for the game. Sure, there are some occasional accidental touches or what have you that lockout a good attack or riposte. But what do we gain from this trade off? I would say that we avoid the marching, non target threatening attacks of the fleuret, and allow for a lot of play with the tempo and distance, simply because the counterattack has a legitimate shot at winning.

I think he's advocating a limited version of the fleche, with no multiple running steps. Might be tough for refs to decide how much crossing is too much, but I've heard the suggestion elsewhere.

Frankly I think that it's wrong from a fairness standpoint to prohibit a basic footwork action to one weapon while allowing for the others, but if we are to address that it would be much better IMO to prohibit it for all weapons than to bring it back to sabre. It's absence has cleaned up sabre vastly, and I'd just as soon keep it that way...
