FIE Congress in Palermo November 21-22, 2009 - Live reports on Federscherma TV Saturday, November 21 and Sunday 22 in Palermo, Sicily, the FIE will have its 2009 Congress. Both days the Congress will be in session from 9 am to 6 pm involving 134 national fencing federations members of the FIE.
The agenda includes the approval of the minutes of the 2008 Paris Congress, the acceptance of the new members to the FIE, and voting on the proposals and reports submitted by the various FIE Commissions.
Then the discussions and decisions on London 2012 will take place: the most significant being which weapon team events will be in and which two team events will be out, since the IOC did not approve for London to have an expansion from 10 to 12 medals for the discipline of fencing.
The next item will be the voting to award the World Championships: - 2011 Junior Worlds (and Cadet if the motions by France and Germany to suppress the cadet portion of the world championships did not pass)
- 2011 Senior World Championships
- 2010 and 2011 Veteran World Championships
The anticipation is high in Palermo waiting to see which city will get the 2011 Senior World Championships between Budapest, Catania, and Tianjin.
The FIS has pulled all the stops to make this a memorable FIE Congress mobilizing the press and the local entities to welcome all delegates hoping that Catania will result the winner of this three ways race. Check the information and presentation of the Catania and Budapest candidature http://www.siciliascherma.it/ http://issuu.com/hunfencing.hu/docs/...candidate_city
The FIS will have live reports and interviews on Federscherma TV on the Congress proceedings. http://www.atleticomtv.it/federscherma/ -

I'll just never understand the lack of influence the FIE has with the IOC. Many of us were hoping the new FIE president would be able to convince the FIE not to continue to force the removal of different teams every four years for the Olympics. Next thing will be the loss of individual events.

The ONLY sport which did was boxing. They dropped a couple of men's weight classes and added some women's, netting a slight increase. All of the other requests from various international governing bodies for increases were denied.

There is no mention of FIE calendar changes...
There was a proposal to have only 5 World Cups with Team events
and 3 GP without Team events per weapon/gender
Was it withdrawn or just not mentioned yet?

-B Isn't there a difference between adding events that are new, and losing events that have been part of the modern Olympics for years? And yes, I know that WS is new. -

FIE Congress: a press conference and the Memorial Calarese Trophy From the FIS web site http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=77695&s=7 http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=77697&s=7

Memorial Calarese
Eight of the current best sabreists in the world, winners of the most important fencing competitions in 2009, together with the Olympic Champion in Beijing 2008 will compete in the "Memorial Calarese," an International Saber Trophy scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at 9:30 pm, in the prestigious venue at the Teatro Politeama in Palermo.
This is a sporting event with great competitiveness and spectacular appeal. It is a very high level competition honoring the memory of Wladimiro Calarese, one of the best Italian saber fencers of all times. He was born in Messina in 1930 and achieved great results during his brilliant career culminating with four Olympic medals and two world championships medals (individual and team).
Fencers competing for the Trophy: - Man Zhong, Beijing Olympic Champion 2008,
- Nicolas Limbach, 2009 Antalya World Champion,
- Veniamin Reshetnikov, 2009 European Champion,
- Mamoudou Keita, 2009 African Champion,
- Jason Rogers, 2009 Panamerican Champion,
- Luigi Tarantino, 2009 silver medal (team) at the world championships in Antalya,
- Giampiero Pastore, 2009 silver medal (team) at the world championships in Antalya,
- Aldo Montano, 2004 Olympic Champion in Athens, and 2009 silver medal (team) at the world championships in Antalya.
The eight fencers will compete in a direct elimination format. The pairings determined on the basis of the current world ranking are: - Tarantino-Zhong,
- Pastore-Reshetnikov,
- Montano-Rogers,
- Limbach-Keita.
"This is a wonderful way to remember my father," said Gianguido Calarese, "even more so because this competition takes place during the FIE Congress. I would like for my father to be remembered not only as one of the best Italian saber fencers of all times but also that Wladimiro Calarese was a very respected scientist. This is the message which I wish will reach our youths: you must work hard to achieve important goals both in sports and in the professional life. This is what shows the true character of a person."

Press conference and who was Wladimiro Calarese? From the FIS web site: http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=77763&s=7
11/20/2009 - 06:29 pm
PALERMO - The delegates have arrived, the conference hall at "San Paolo Palace" is ready. Everything is ready for the FIE Congress which from tomorrow will convene more than 100 member nations. Today (Friday) there was the meeting of the FIE Executive Committee followed by a press conference with Alisher Usmanov, FIE President, Giorgio Scarso, FIS President and FIE vice-President, Nino Strano, District Councillor for Sport of the Sicilian Region, Massimo Costa, President of the Regional CONI, and Sebastiano Manzoni, President of the Regional Fencing Committee.
Alisher Usmanov underlined how happy he was to be in Sicily. “Italy is a very important nation for international fencing both in terms of results and organization," he said, and added, "If this Congress were to decide that the 2011 Senior World Championships will take place in Catania, everybody would be happy, and for sure me as well."
Giorgio Scarso promised that this FIE Congress will be the best organized congress for the past 20 years and he also talked about the fencing tradition of Palermo. “The first Olympic medals came with athletes from Palermo and Wladimiro Calarese, to whose memory tomorrow, November 21, the tournament is dedicated, knew how to combine sport and culture. It is time for Palermo to fulfill this role." Note:
The fencing results of Wladimiro Calarese can be found on http://www.sports-reference.com/olym...alarese-1.html
What is even more interesting to find out is that Wladimiro Calarese was a rocket scientist who came to the US to study in 1967 while continuing to be part of the Italian national team until his retirement from competition in 1970. He was married to an American, Barbara, and lived in Dayton, OH, for almost 30 years as a scientist working at/for NASA. He died of a heart attack in 2005 after returning to the US from a trip to Italy.
You can do a google search of Calarese and space research and find interesting papers he has authored.
To be a successful fencer it helps to be a rocket scientist...or viceversa. -
"I wish you good work!" From the FIS web site http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=77768&s=7
11/21/2009 - 9:35 am
PALERMO - The FIE Congress opened at the hotel San Paolo with the welcoming remarks by Giorgio Scarso, FIS President. “I have the honor and the privilege to welcome you on hehalf of Italian fencing." Addressing the task facing the delegates to grow the world fencing, "We don't have here in Palermo executives from small or big [fencing] nations but only executives who work hard for their own sport. The decisions we will take will be based on what is good for the sport, and not motivated by self-interest."
Scarso concluded his remarks with the leitmotiv of these two days, "Dear friends, I wish you good work!" -

Tomorrow the vote for the 2011 Senior World Championships between, Budapest, Catania, and Tianjin. Does that mean that MF team for example is going to be in the 2016 Games, because it was not in the 2008 Olympics, or will it be out of 2016 because it is in for 2012? In other words, is there a rotation, or does the FIE vote to leave teams out regardless of what has gone on before? -
The FIE votes based on what it wants, there is no official rotation. -
Jason Rogers is fencing in Italy and sending updates to me on the FIE congress voting and the saber fencing competition. Check here: http://timmorehouse.wordpress.com/20...ndon-olympics/ -

I'm not afraid to sound dumb, but since there is no rotation for the teams, wouldn't it make more sense for the FIE to vote on the teams for TWO Olympics ahead, 2012 and 2016, so the national federations can plan better allocation of resources and training? Although it may seem that there is lots of time for 2012, there really isn't, so getting a jump on 2016 would help for all the countries. Similar Threads -
