It's still possible for the IOC to grant fencing the additional events in 2016, so I expect fencing wants to act as if we'll get them.

    PALERMO
    - Great fencing tonight in Palermo at the Teatro Politeama during the "Memorial Calarese," a trophy to honor the memory of one of the best Sicilian saber fencers ever. Aldo Montano won in the final bout over Nicolas Limbach 15-10.

With about 1000 people present including Michele Maffei and Rolando Rigoli, the competition started with Nicolas Limbach (GER) against Mamoudou Seta (SEN) with a 15-7 win. Then Giampiero Pastore (ITA) beat Benjamin Reshetnikov (RUS) 15-9.

In the quarter finals Luigi Tarantino (ITA) fenced against the 2008 Olympic Champion Zhong Man (CHN). After an intense bout Zhong won 15-10. Lastly, Aldo Montano (ITA), had a real hard time to beat Jason Rogers (USA) 15-11, after an 8-7 partial.

In the semifinals, Pastore recovered with a 0-4 against Limbach (5-5 first then 7-7), but eventually he lost 9-15. Aldo Montano on the other hand beat Zhong Man 15-13 in the Olympic champions duel.

Montano wa undefeated in the final also. Against the current world champion, Nicolas Limbach, Aldo was ahead from start to finish. The last point at 15-10 was few minutes past midnight, local time.

Tomorrow the vote for the city which will host the 2011 senior world championships.

Thank you for this memorial to Calarese. We hold a memorial tournament for Wladimiro in the fall at Wright State University, a fencing program started by Wladimiro. My first coach was his main student and assistant coach here in Dayton, this tournament means a lot to us.

    Catania 2011

    From the FIS web site

    PALERMO
    - After Neaples 1929, Rome 1955 and 1982, Turin 1961 and 2006 (including also San Remo 1936 where only the WF team event took place) the Senior World Championships will return to Italy. In 2011 the hosting city will be Catania.

In the first round of votes at the FIE Congress in Palermo, Catania came with 55 votes, Budapest with 42, and Tianjin with 13. In the next round Catania came over Budapest 62 to 52.

Giorgio Scarso, FIS President said right after the selection, "It is an honor for Italian fencing to host these world championships. It is our responsibility to do a good job and to offer the world not only a sporting event of a very high level but also one which will be etched in the memory of all participants."

    PALERMO
    - He doesn't even know how many days he is at home each month, and those familiar with his traveling schedule know that Giorgio Scarso over the past months has been traveling more around the world than at home in his beloved Modica (Sicily). As FIS President, Scarso is the first and most important ambassador of the Worlds Championships candidature which in 2011 will return to Italy.

Scarso is a man of action, not of words. "Now I go back to work," he said immediately after the customary toast celebrating with Alisher Usmanov, FIE President, Sebastiano Manzoni, FIS Regional Committee President, and Nino Strano, councilor for tourism, communication and transportation for the Region of Sicily. "I thank those who voted for us and those who--I hope--will do so next time."

"This is a victory for Catania, for Sicily, and for Italian fencing," says Scarso. "We got many votes already in the first round. This shows that our movement is healthy form the international political and sport point of view. I thank the delegates of the nations who gave us their vote but right now I think also about all the fencers, from the youngest ones to the most famous ones in Italy. Right at this moment the Under 14 circuit first national event is taking place in Verona, with the support of our sponsor Kinder +Sport. For sure for all these young participants in Verona the world championships in Catania will happen too soon but we all know that they will be our future on the strip."

Moving from the future to the present, Scarso continues, "This is a beautiful Congress, an added value which we offered to the world of fencing. End of June 2010 we will have the senior Italian Championships in Syracuse, another important event for Sicilian fencing, and then in 2011 the Worlds." With the cooperation and collaboration of the regional institutions, the local authorities, the sponsors, Scarso is sure that the world championships will be not only a sport event but also an opportunity to merge entertainment and culture. "Now a series of next steps will begin," says Scarso, "But now I really have some work to do!"

This is the link to the video web cast of the interviews after the final vote (in Italian, Russian, and French).

Did they decide the host cities for future Junior World Champs, and if the Cadet Worlds will be eliminated?

If they have a video of the event I'll post the link. Considering that this took place in the major theater in Palermo it is possible that there is no (professional) video.

All the decisions will percolate out of the Congress and will be posted on the FIE web site. In the meantime you can contact the USFA office and they will be happy to tell you everything since they were there...and actively participated in the Congress

Here is how the Italians celebrated this victory:

Was there any mention of World Cup calendar for next season. My understanding is that they want to change drastically the senior World Cup schedule. Does this need to go through the congress? or is it just an executive decision?

I don't know if it means anything regarding the lifespan of the Cadet event, but in the official FIE news release, it mentions that Ukraine is a candidate to organize the 2012 Junior and Cadet World Championships.

Any decision on future Vets Worlds? And where do you look for it? I can't find it on the FIE site.

Probably haven't been announced yet. Several people have told me that it will be Porec, Croatia this year.

By the way, the Russian Vet Worlds website finally has all of the results up, including the parts of the DE tables missing from the other site.

It would be interesting to know the Vets dates, although Croatia is the hot pick.

The Commonwealth Vets are to be held in Melbourne Australia 29 Sept - 5 Oct (in conjunction with Commonwealth Seniors).

The Australian Veteran site now says that the World Champs will be the exact same dates as the Commonwealth veterans -- 29 Sept - 5 Oct.

Do not know where they get their info, except the Pres of their Federation would be just back from Sicily and at the National Champs.
