Array Where do you fence? Not that I want to stalk you, but, (out of curiosity of course) what fencing club/center do you fence at? I love going to SCFC (South Coast Fencing Center). They are the best. -

Array What's that supposed to mean? I may not be the best fencer but I have been fencing for a year and a half now. So I've come a long way. -

Array It's supposed to mean you're club is not the best. Danger mouse is saying you just started, and you probably haven't seen many other clubs besides yours, so your opinion probably isn't really worth anything.
That's what i got from the post anyway.
I hope the translation helped. Personally, I'm glad your hear, and I hope you stick with it. Everyone relax cause I got it.... -

Array My club aside, (since I'm obviously biased), I'd have to say I love fencing at the Bucks County Academy of Fencing. I've only been there twice, but every time there have been nothing but super nice people, strong fencers to bout against and pizza + beer/wine on fridays after practice. Love that place! -

You could say that, but a new person can't actually determine that. I'm happy to be there and I want people to know that. This is more likely to be empirically true, but it could be true for the wrong reasons (e.g. you're happy because you think you're being trained well, when it turns out you aren't). -

Array Of all the nonsense to argue about.......
I fence at the Georgia Southern University Fencing Club. And I would dispute your claim that your club is the best. If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.
If you set a man on fire, he is warm for the rest of his life. -

I hope the translation helped. Personally, I'm glad your hear, and I hope you stick with it. That's mostly what I was getting at. The OP has posted a bunch of threads recently that showcase his lack of experience. I'm glad you like your club, but the statement "they are the best" implies experience with other clubs as well as enough fencing experience to distinguish what makes a good club vs a bad club. I know a lot of people that loved their club and thought it was great until they went to another club and discovered that the original club really wasn't so great.
I have no experience with SCFC, so this is in no way a commentary about them.
I love my club, but it is by no means the best place I have trained. My favorite has been L'Institut Vallier in Marseille, but it was not the best in terms of quality of instruction and fencing. The best for instruction and fencing has been Northwest Fencing Center in Portland, OR, but they are not my "favorite". In between is Hooked on Fencing in Cleveland, OH. My current club cannot compete with any of these, but it's where I can fence three times a week without driving hours each way. -

Perhaps the phrase "the best" is simply meant as a compliment, in other words, it is a common expression of praise in the OP's limited vocabulary. I don't think the OP REALLY means that it is literally the BEST club in the US. -

Most fencers have serious issues distinguishing between which things are facts about the world that are independently verifiable (e.g. by points standings), and which things have just been said enough times that they seem like facts.
If you say your coach is a good coach enough times, you can get yourself to believe it more strongly than you believe many actual facts.
So, I say that a lot to try to emphasize the distinction.
Come to think of it, ROW fencers might have particular trouble with this because with ROW, if enough people say something is true enough times, and they're the right people saying it, it actually BECOMES true, which can kind of make you feel a little insane sometimes. -

Nico, glad you are enjoying fencing. Best of luck to you and your club. -

I agree with "Him" especially as he is the "one-eyed" and I am "the blind". Still I did score a few points off "Him" today!
