    Extreme Forum Moderation

I was hanging out with some friends that also post/lurk on f.net and the topic of forum moderation came up. This community has pretty loose rules and tends to stay at quite clean. I'm not at all suggesting we go to this system but for those that want a laugh at the expense of others take a look at these links.

The first link is their very strict forum rules. The second is a list of the infractions of those rules, not for the thin skinned or easily offended.

Question: What are your thoughts on moderation, flaming and the sometimes caustic nature of these boards?

Edit: My favorite rule of theirs is:

All discussion should be both polite and civil. Trolling or flaming in any form is forbidden. Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are stupid or on drugs and their personal hygiene isn't really relevant to the discussion. Regardless of the merit (or lack thereof) of your argument, it should be made in a way that is neither insulting nor condescending. -EJ

This is coming from a forum hosted by a group naming itself Elitist Jerks. They have a very similar situation to us, a lot of people post the same question over and over and over and over and over (onto infinity) and the answers are either indeterminate or found in a myriad of old threads. It is interesting, to me at least, how our two different communities have handled this annoyance.

I like some of the reasons:

    Further idiocy
    General idiocy
    and my favorite so far:

To be fair the board is called "Elitist Jerks".

Some of their rules are quite compelling.. I like the one about using proper English...

Oh, sweet virgin Mary and all of her wacky nephews , the EJ forums. So many memories.

If someone disagrees with me on EJ, they *are* on drugs, 'cause they're playing WoW.

Agreed. Compared to my time in the WoW forums and the Chans, this is like Sunday school.

    Easily.

My theory is that since many of us are from a community of ~20,000 fencers, there's just not enough anonymity to troll/flame/spam/everything else that happens on other forums that requires moderation. Most of the troublemakers here are the (relatively few) anonymous ones.

Causing trouble, for me, is like a marathon. How can i run the marathon if i'm disqualified the first mile?

I will look into Mr. E

When I went to my first tournament and actually saw people who'd seen what I wrote I was like

    "yeah, that's right... "

than I spent an hour crying in the girls bathroom.

Agreed... Mr. Epee was/is knowledgeable and clever in his sh1t stirring.... a tough act to follow.

A less difficult act to follow, yet still amusing (in his own way) was RL or Reverse Lunge.

And yet what is said on this forum sometimes freaks out various members of the board.

Still - Some ideas to be gained from the EJ site.

I think our biggest problem right now, and for the Holiday season, will be the shopfoco, viagra, and other spam-posting "outsource agents" from the Philippines that are hitting the board now.

Me, I'm in favor of everyone registering on f.net having to have either a USFA, FIE, or other NGB license number or passport, school id or DMV license and use the name thereupon. One source of continuing embarrasment is mis-guessing who is using which handle.

I can't begin to explain how much trouble that got me into recently.

    Agreed.

If anyone's thinking about putting in rules for using proper English, can we make grammar and punctuation part of that as well?

Having been an admin in a FPS gaming clan for some time... agreed.

Anyone who thinks anything here is bad needs to stroll over to a Counter Strike (or any other Source mod) clan server or forum. *shudder*
