Lee and Ku of Korea have bronzes in épée at Sydney and Lisboa. The only reason Kim didn't get the credit he deserved over the years was that Golubitsky was his contemporary.
Both countries deserve to be mentioned with Germany, France, Russia and Italy where point weapons are concerned.
Paolo | Actually Kim owns Golubitsky. Even Golubitsky himself admits that Kim is much stronger than him. Golubitsky was really lucky that he won the 1997 WC(15-14). Of course Kim had his revenge in the 2k Olympics with a crushing victory of 15-6. |

Sergei managed to project this incredible aura of invincibility even in defeat, which overshadowed his opponents.
I think that he and Kim were the most effective and elegant foilists of the nineties (or late ninties at least).

| shining lotus it was a lively commentary. maybe people wouldn't mind making some kind of significant donation and skip the tapes? I like the idea of having a competition, with a percentage of the money to go to a worthy cause? Why not try that?

| I have produced a DVD+R of the semifinal and final individual bouts for Men's Epee and gold medal team bout of the WC at Lisbon. The problem of why I haven't been able to released them has to do with sales volume and DVD compatibility. I also have another version burned into the DVD-R format at a slightly higher cost. I edited the footage obtained from Emilio Arguello and Guillermo Alger (BFC), who also belong to the organization EsgrimaMEX.com ( http://www.esgrimamex.com ). Proceeds will be used to support this Spanish fencing site and webforum (#6 in the fencing world according to fetchen.de; FYI: Fencing net is #1). Craig apparently was talking with them to have a special deal for Fencing Net members.
Advantages for DVD over VHS:
* Great enhanced resolution: about 6 pixels into a maximum resolution VHS pixel. Typical recordings from PAL to VHS would have about 180-240 lines as compared to 720 lines of resolution. In my HDTV system, there is a huge difference between the 2000 Olympic tapes (from EDEW) and this record.
* Slow motion is frame by frame up to 30 frames per second with each one looking crisp. No fear that the tape would be streched while going back and forth.
Problem:
Despite the advent of the competing formats, there are still compatibility issues and would not play into all of DVD players. Given the small number of DVDs to be sold, it will be difficult to handle returns due to lack of compatibility.

I know a few of you email me earlier about them. I will be going to Overland park for Friday PM, Saturday and Sunday AM. |

| I know this is late, but Eric, is it still possible to order 2002 tapes from you? I've ordered the 2000 and 2001 tapes in the past, and was really looking forward to the 2002 tapes, but when it came time, I was flat, dead, scraping the barrel broke. Is there anything I can do to get all of the 2002 tapes? |

| When did Kim stop fencing?
That 1997 bout was the greatest -- I got those tapes from Eric but I think someone stole them from me (i.e. borrowed them and never returned them). What a shame, that was incredible fencing. And Golubitsky was so lucky on that last touch. |

| Not to belittle Kim's heroics, Golubitsky was not lucky on that last touch. It was a perfectly set-up fake step-in, parry-riposte.

| tapes Which tapes are currently available? All of them or just a few, if more than some are available, then I would be interested in women's epee, men's epee, and team epee events. I've done very well without a tv or vcr over then past 10 years, what with living in the jungle and all who needs it, but i'm willing to buy one, for the tapes, for the kid.

| I should put it this way. The last touch may not have been lucky, but he was lucky Kim scored one less touch than was necessary on his incredible stream of comeback touches. It's like Golubitsky didn't wake up until 14-14. |

| Yeah, but I didn't discuss that part because on your tape it isn't present. Or, at least, the coverage of the bout starts after a break, and he was already up by a huge margin there. |

| I just rewatched that tape. It's a good tape. I didn't realize that it had parts of the semi-finals and sabre (and sem-finals of that too) in it. I think I had never actually watched that tape.
Anyway, at the start of the third period, Golubitsky was ahead 9-3 or so. He then scored two more points and James Chambers (or whover is the announcer: he understands a bit of foil, but his sabre knowledge is worse than most fencing parents) was sadden by the huge scoring deficit.
Then Kim scores 8 straight touches to tie the score at 11. Golubitsky and Kim then trade touches with Sergei always getting the first to get ahead, to 14-14. Well, actually, they traded to 15-15, but since Sergei scored the fifteenth touch first, Kim doesn't get his fifteenth. :-)

| It's funny, I watched that tape not so long ago, and someone pointed to me that Sergei does exactly the same thing in his 15th touch than he did in his 13th touch. It's like he did it on purpose.
Of course, Kim was unlucky to miss that attack just before...

Then again, Kim did the same thing against Sergei several times, advance with preparation, draw the attack, parry and riposte to the shoulder. He did that about 4 times in his run-up from his 11-3 deficit.

| What tapes? Are people actually interested in the 1997 events? I guess I could make duplicates of those tapes. I have the "NTSC" master, so I can make them. I need to hear from people first, otherwise it doesn't make economic sense for me to make a bunch of 1997 tapes and have them sit around in my den, gathering dust.
