    Is fencing for me?

    Hi All,

I can't really say I'm new to fencing, it's more that I'm wondering if fencing and I are right for one another.

I am 43, ex-hockey player, looking for a new sport. I have been watching fencing, when I clock it's on the telly, and the speed and finesse really interests me.

Question: Am I too old? Are there clubs for new starters at my age?

    Any comment welcome.

    Thanks

    Angela

You are definitely not too old at 43. I started at 52 and in very poor physical condition. I'm still not in great condition, but I'm having a lot of fun and meeting a lot of great people. Besides, there's that chance to live out that Zorro fantasy.

All kidding aside, it's a great sport with an opportunity to get a lot of physical and mental exercise. You can also compete with people of all ages and make a lot of friends.

I hope you enjoy it mightily!

I have found a club close to home and have got myself invited to a mixed group on Monday night.
I can't wait, thanks for the encouragement.

If you haven't found out yet, there is a whole tournament classification for people our age ie 40+: "Veterans." Even if we are beginners.

    Enjoy, and good luck!

If you have ever been at all interested in it, I think you will find that you enjoy it once you try it. I started at 45(and really out of shape) and have been doing it for a year now. Loving every minute of it. I am sure you can find beginner classes at your local salle/club or even an introductory course through your local community college. Don't worry about the shape--fencing will help with that once you get into it. Enjoy yourself and welcome to the community

Yep. There's this wonderful game called epee where clever old farts can use pure guile to counter the speed, strength, and mobility of their younger opponents. There are plenty of 40+ guys who can hand my 21-year-old arse back to me on a platter with mashed potatoes and gravy.

And by "wonderful", he means "Dull. Dull. My God it's dull, it's so desperately dull and tedious and stuffy and boring and des-per-ate-ly DULL."

    Angela,

In hockey did you play forward or D?

There are tactics that will translate for you and some that won't. You can adapt a constructive or destructive game to all 3 weapon disciplines, so it's a matter of what the core group of people you'll be fencing with are doing that's going to be a main driver for you.

Let us know how things go.

But if we ever STOPPED doing that, what in the bleedin' heck would we all talk about?!?

And it does provide fodder for some really good funny, after all.
