Not that I wish to diminish Ms Bouwcamp or her accomplishment, it should be noted that Mariel Zagunis is also nominated.
True. Mariel, however, has 18 votes to Cat's 760+, so if we want a fencer to win this poll voting Cat over the top would be the way to go, unless we have about 1000 voters mobilized to vote for Mariel.
Or, everyone could set up multiple twitter accounts and vote away...
If you haven't voted, time is getting short. As of the time of this posting only 18 votes separate the closest nominee from Cat Bouwkamp. Support a wheelchair fencer by voting!
Thanks so much to everyone who voted in the Athlete of the Month poll on twitter. When the polls closed tonight Cat was the WINNER of the public poll for USOC Female Athlete of the month of October. The closest nominee trailed by 49 votes, with 1,095 votes for Cat and wheelchair fencing. Thank you all or suporting Cat, voting, and getting votes. It was great fun.
The online vote accounted for 10 percent of the final tally, with a voting panel of U.S. Olympic family members comprising the remainder. Today the USOC announced that Cat Bouwkamp officially tied for second place for USOC Female Athlete of the Month. First place went to Olympic gold medal gymnast Bridget Sloan, also from Indiana, who won at the 2009 World Championships in London . Cat tied with Taekwondo athlete Danielle Pelham who won the women's bantamweight title at the World Championships. Third in the voting was two-time Olympic gold medal sabre fencer Mariel Zagunis.
