Another option is the airport. I'm staying at the Residence Inn at The airport 12/5 + a 2 day car rental. Total cost though Priceline is $116.00. [Bid 45 for hotel at airport 3 star location], [Bid 18 for compact car].

Yeah, but you are going into town on a very heavily used road at rush hour if you are trying to get to the venue for a morning check-in. Not a great idea.

Any of the outlying areas will work the same, with the same problem. Monroeville in the East, Cranberry in the North, ...

1337, while you do have a chance of snow in December, and we had a very heavy snowstorm the last time we held a NAC at this venue, normally you will find Pittsburgh to be cool, overcast, and fairly clear of snow on the roads. It has been unusually warm for fall so far, but that doesn't mean squat. Pittsburgh is known for many freeze/thaw cycles, so it's likely to be low 40s in the day, going down to low 30s at night, but it could be a bit warmer or a bit colder. We usually get a spell of much colder weather (below zero several days in a row), but that is usually late Jan.

Surely there won't be a lot of traffic, even from the airport, at 0700 on Saturday and Sunday

It's not that short a drive, and you never know when somebody is going to decide that the road sucks so they should close it and rebuild it again so you have to take an hour detour. Or, if somebody special has a playoff game, and the very fanatic fans are going in droves to camp at the stadium early in the morning. It's just a bad plan.

not that much traffic, but you can't underestimate how nuts steelers fans are, and there's a home game that weekend.

Eh, "brisk". And for BRTech, "cool". Funny. Very funny...

You know, if I were to tell you that 115 degrees in Phoenix is only "warm" or "balmy" just because it's not quite as hot as Death Valley or the Sahara, would you be comforted?

Poor Inq...You'll be OK. And I've been in Vegas at high summer. I'll take the cold, as one can always put on more clothes. When it's hot, I can only take off so much before everyone laughs. Or throws up.
You might not want to go up on Mt Washington, although it's one of the prettiest vantage points around to see the city. It get kinda nippy up there with a brisk breeze. Is a good restaurant there, though, right beside the incline station. And if you like transportation history, there's lots of info at the top-sort of a museum.

They're not kidding about the brisk and the cool. Average highs will be in 40F range. Thats above freezing folks. We don't usually get considerable snow until after New Years, but the weather is quite unpredictable.
For those looking for cheaper spots to stay with somewhat easy venue access, has anyone looked in the Oakland neighborhood? There's quite a few hotels that serve the universities, are less than ten minuets from the venue, and should be fairly inexpensive. Oakland is also the home of lots of good cheap food and drink, especially late nights. Fuel and Fuddle, Hemmingway's, Joe Mama's and India Garden all run really good late night half-price menus and are within good walking distance of the Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn and Quality Inn in Oakland.

    ...To see what city, exactly?

Has to do with the fact that during the French & Indian War, George Washington was at the point, known as Fort Duquesne in those days. Today, if you are at the point or in that part of downtown, say the Hilton (Inq...) and you look toward a river and up, you will see a small mountain or big hill.... Mt. Washington.

Well, if you'd take off the pith helmet once in a while some body heat might escape through your head and you could get acclimated to lower temperatures.

Meanwhile, I am not interested in mounting Washington.

Mergs, you sound like my husband...born and raised on the beach in NC. He was personally insulted when he got snowed on during a visit home for my dad's funeral, in early March. If it's under 70, much moaning and lots clothes.
Inq, I somehow think Washington would not be very interested in you, either. But the restaurant is great, and the view wonderful.
See you both at the NAC. James will be there too. Maybe you guys can get together and moan about the weather.
