Array European Junior Championships, Odense, Denmark With the British Forum down for repairs I thought I would see if there were any other Europeans out there wanted to get a discussion going.
Here is the link http://www.ejc09.eu/index.php?option...d=49&Itemid=59
We Brits have had a mixed start. 2 of the 3 WS girls being cuts and Sophie Williams going out in the L32. Shame, though to be honest they did actually perform to their inital seeding.
The MF lads seem to be doing better as befits the upbeat moof in British Men's Foil at the moment.
Rhys Melia 5/5
Jamie Fitz 4/5
Marcus Mepstead 3/6
Husayn Rosowsky 3/3
With cuts seeming to be about 20%, Rhys may get a bye into the L32. Name: Paul Sibert
Coach at: Nottingham Cavaliers FC (adult); Sherwood Cadets FC (Juniors) both in Nottingham England -

Array Good luck lads!
Glad to see Rhys doing well, he could get Fitzy in the L16 (which would be a shame)
What happened to Husayn? "There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" -

To me it looks like just one drop the other 2 losses seem to be agianst fencers doing really well on the day. They all vary so much at this age and the line is so thin between a great day and a cr*p one. The 5th seed, (the greek Kont....s who would need to be 8 feet wide to get his name on his back) was cut! Array I just wondered who had put him out (or if he had withdrawn) because I couldn't see him on the tableau.
Rhys vs Fitzy in L16- shame but at least one Brit will be in L8. "There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" -

Array Oh Marcus, So close.
Thought Jamie would demolish Wosniak, having trained with the Austrian in Hungary this summer. He had to work to beat me and Jamie would flatten me!! Name: Paul Sibert

Array Tough day for our WF- all 4 eliminated after poules and only 2 victories between them.
Fingers crossed for the ME team. "There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" -

Google translate tells me there were no serious injuries- which is a great relief- but still a very worrying development. "There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots" -

The articla also says that fencers who are worried were welcome to switch to regular masks for the rest of the event. The organisers had masks to lend them, but it luckily it seems that no "mass hysteris" has spread.
The feeling I get from the article is that everyone sees it is an unlucky -- and lucky! -- incident. -
Hi!
ZZ beat me to it.
It says in the article that the Lexan was pierced due to a normal lunge, and that the blade was not broken. The Lexan mask did not show any obvious signs of previous damage. The lexan plate was pierced, causing a 2 cm diameter hole, and the fencer got a profusely bleeding would just over the corner of the mouth
It also says that the medican commission of the European Fencing Federation has recommended that fencers should not use the mask during the remainder of the championships. However, the article also notes that the other users of Lexan masks continued to used their masks as if nothing had happened.
On another note, the Odense fencing club uses an unusual layout for the strips: http://www.ofk.foreningssite.dk/Nyheder/20091101.aspx
I have tried to find any mention of this accident in Danish media, but so far I have not found any.
Hoping for a speedy recovery,

Peter Gustafsson Is it reasonable to expect any type of "urgent letter" on the FIE website if they are considering changing rules about Lexan masks as a result of this accident? -
