Array My club has played music basically all day everyday since long before I was fencing there. When you're just hangin out at the club, or on strip messing around, its fun to have the music playing. When you're fencing a serious bout, its not hard to tune it out.* Usually something along the lines of Muse, Linkin park, etc...
*Practicing the ability to tune out distractions while fencing?!?!?! ZOMG thats NEVER important in competition.... "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -

Array The problem with music while fencing is that when it's loud it drowns out other sounds. Some of these can be important. And particularly when I'm refereeing, I don't want to miss the sound of a parry or have someone not hear me say "Halt". Nor do I wish to shout over music.
I know that today people expect to be listening to music from cradle to grave, including while sleeping, eating, showering, and making love. Probably many would like to have rap blasting at funerals and in church. To this I say meh, and if you want to fence with your iPod playing in practice, fine, but ambient music is still a bad idea... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

I think it just varies from club to club, and specifically about the demographic of fencers in the club. My club consists almost exclusively of fencers between 10-21 years old. The coaches aren't a whole lot older. It makes sense we would like the music there.
Another club I've spent alot of time at has a significantly older group of fencers, and there is never any music playing..
To each his own... "Sir, didn't I parry"

Array Since I don't normally listen to music very loudly anyways (occasionally there will be some opera or the like while I'm in the car, but not normally), so I can always here the other sounds around me as well.
This is more of what I was talking about (this is actually one of my favorites to listen to before and sometimes during a tournament):
