Pan Am Medals for U.S. Juniors
U.S. fencers earned three medals - one gold, one silver and one bronze at the
2002 Junior and Cadet Pan American Fencing Championships in Santiago, Chile,
Oct. 21-26.
Carolyn Wright (16, Arlington, Va./Virginia Acad. of Fencing) avenged a loss
to Brazil's Elora Ugo Pattaro by defeating her in the Under-20 Women's Sabre
event to win the gold medal.
Wright competed with 13 other fencers from Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Chile,
El Salvador, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Wright earned the silver but lost to Pattaro in the Under-17 competition two
days earlier. In the gold medal bout, Wright clutched victory from the jaws
of defeat by a score of 15-14. At one point in the bout she was down 9-13.
In the Under 20 Men's Epee event, Rob Bralow (19, Philadelphia, Pa./Fenc.
Acad. of Phila.) won the bronze medal; U.S. teammate Jason Stockdale (17,
Lansdowne, Pa./Fenc. Acad. of Phila.) was 5th. Bralow defeated Jose Felix
Dominguez of Argentina, to reach the final four, winning by a hair 15-14. In
the semifinals he lost to Patricio Moreno of Chile 15-12.
On the final day of competition at the Pan American Junior and Cadet Fencing
Championships in Santiago, Chile, U.S. junior Alisa Mendelsohn (16,
Rockville Center, N.Y./Fencers Club) won the bronze medal in the Under-20
Women's Foil competition.
Mendelsohn defeated Carla Damico of Argentina 15-8 to reach the final four,
where she was defeated by Antonieta Gonzalez of Mexico, 15-12. Gonzalez went
on to win the competition.
The Pan American Junior and Cadet Championships are held every year by the
Confederacion Panamericana de Esgrima, or Pan American Fencing
Confederation. The Confederation was established in 1955 with the purpose of
serving as a link among nations throughout the hemisphere. Twenty-six
nations belong to the Confederation.
