The first string gets hits the field for the Penn State Open.
or maybe the top fencer's from the top schools all get sick the same time every year, but get better a week after that. Everyone relax cause I got it.... -
The events that really matter to the coaches are the team events, the dual meets. Individual events such as the Temple Open are really more like warmups for the duals. -

Many team events require a full squads. Not every fencer wants to go to every tournament ever, particularly if they involve traveling. The nice thing about individual events is that the fencers who want to go and have the experience can do so, the ones better served (for whatever reason) by a weekend at home can do that. -

And homework, and other trips, lectures, requirements.... While varsity athletes often can reschedule these things more easily than others, you still have to a time to reschedule them TO.... -

Penn State (as well as others) use this as a developmental event for their younger fencers. -
