Junior World Cup Update (USFA)

23 October 2002
For Immediate Release

The junior and cadet season has begun, and U.S. juniors and cadets are on the march around the globe. In a weekend of heavy European world cup competition, one U.S. cadet, Matthew Zich of New York, N.Y. took home a bronze medal from a cadet international men's sabre tournament in Godollo, Hungary, and several others reached the top 16.

In Godollo, Oct. 18-19, U.S. cadets competed with 144 fencers from Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, and Austria. They did very well - including Zich's bronze medal, four others reached the top 32, including:

- Bronze, Matthew Zich (16, New York, N.Y./Fencers Club)
- 8th, Bill Thanhouser (16, Portland, Ore./Ore. Fencing Alliance)
- 9th, Jeff Baum, (16, Lee's Summit, Mo./Kansas City F.C.)
- 10th, Jonathan Berkowsky (14, Sicklerville, N.J./Fencing Acad. of S.
Jersey)
- 22nd, Max Williams (17, Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Fencing Club)

Waldek Czaya (Dallas, Texas) and Yuanchun Ma (Sicklerville, N.J.)
accompanied the team as coaches. Steve Mormando (New York, N.Y.) and Terrence Lasker (Columbus, Ohio) were the referees from the U.S.

On the second day a cadet team competition took place and the U.S.F.A. fielded three teams. The "first" team, consisting of Thanhouser, Zich and Berkowsky, placed third in the team competition.

Also in Europe over the weekend, U.S. Junior Jacqueline Leahy earned 6th place at the Mémorial de Martinengo in Bratislava, Slovakia. Leahy is now the 8th-ranked Junior Women's Foil fencer in the world. Full results are below.
