Historical fun tidbit, did you know the reason for cutting the foil below the drip ring of the bottle (AKA the correct way) rather than just poking a hole in it or cutting just the top (the incorrect way) is that the foil (now usually tin, aluminum or plastic) used to be made of lead as recently as 1993?

Are you suggesting that by incorrectly cutting the lead one would not only be affronting one's guests good taste but also putting them at risk of hospitalisation due to lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning is a subtle beast. It's unlikely that an incidental exposure would actually result in symptoms so immediate that a victim would require acute treatment. More likely you would affront their good taste and also push them a bit closer to the brink of insanity.
