| Quote: Originally posted by edew But that wasn't his point, Mike. At least not from how I read it. His point was that there's so many from OFA that they're likely to meet each other before getting to
round of 8 that one will knock the other out of getting into the round of 8, so that making predictions about which fencer from OFA will make it to the round of 8 will be difficult.
The implicit claim is that if an OFA fencer meets a non-OFA fencer, there's a good chance the OFA fencer will win (which is not too farfetched a claim). However, when two OFA fencers meet, it's not clear who will win.
So, predicting which OFA fencer will make top-8 will be difficult because many of them might knock each other out.
At least heuristically, that's the point I believe saber-psycho was trying to infer. | EDEW, I suggest you re-read his post. he was responding to the prediction that 5 OFA girls would make the final, not predictions suggesting which ones would. he says this is unlikely because they are likely to hit before the final. There are two possibilities here, as I see it:
1) His statement applies to ANY prediction of 5 fencers making a final (which it does) and he simply chose this prediction to make an example. i.e., it is a commentary on the usefulness (or lack thereof) of predictions.
2) His statement is meant to, as I believe, imply that it is statistically less likely that five girls from OFA will make the final than that any of the other predictions on this board will come true.
If it is #1, then my statement, though correct, was out of place. if so, he is completely correct, though it is a rather foolish point to make on this thread, which is designed for people to make predictions.
If it is #2, then see my earlier posts.
for that matter, let us consider the statement as you put it: that OFA v. non-OFA, OFA is likely to win. well, with 5 of them at a NAC, they should be seperated in pools, and should thus win all their pool bouts, by your logic. thus, they all five probably seed in the top 8. thus avoiding each other till the finals. Amazing how well that works out, huh?

Allow me to correct you, EDEW.
you said "But that wasn't his point" which is incorrect, what you should have said is "But that wasn't HER point" but the rest is absolutely correct.
Mike, if you want five people to make the finals, lets say (since you obviously don't want to use OFA) random people, so two of those people meet in the round of 16. So if they all win from that point on
, only four of them can make the finals, right?

| WHTouche:
I blush to say that I have not yet seen the second/fifth Star Wars installment. I added Yoda based on word of mouth and from seeing the trailer. He certainly LOOKED hot.
Anybody else have other thoughts on greatest fictional swordspersons of all time?

| Don't bother it's awful. Lucas can't write dialogue, nor is the story and plot particularly well developed, additionally he seems unable to direct [unless it's cgi and even then...]. Keep your money,go and see The Two Towers when it comes out.
People have allowed him too much latittude based primarily on the original 3 films (the best of which he didn't even direct).
Will I see the next one? Possibly. If you had asked me the same question before Episodes I and II I would've said, "Definitely!". Now I might still see it on video but I don't expect to be overly enthused.

| Please tell me Jar-Jar Binks died a slow and disfigured death in the second installment!
But I didn't hear universal cheering when the movie came out, so I suspect my fondest wish didn't come true.
Alas
