And they spelled Scott's name wrong. Excellent.

Why do only the German fencers have clubs listed, I wonder?

Because it is a local tournament and you don't want to have fencers of the same club in the same pool, as much as you can avoid it. Non German fencers are categorized by nationality as it is the logical thing to do.

There are also 99 of them.

As Gladius explained, this is a local tournament. Fencers are seeded by clubs, then fencers from countries other than the host country, the same as is done at USFA events.

It's listed on the site as "A-Jgd Q". Not to sound naive, but what does that mean? How does it relate to this being a "local" competition? Jgd is jugend = cadet, I guess. A? Q?

I understand that you don't want fencers from the same club in the same pool. There are two fencers from the same club in the US group, Wiley and Weiss. That's why I wondered why they didn't list clubs for them. On closer inspection I see that a fencer from the Netherlands and a Swiss fencer have both listed clubs, too.

Huh, interesting. So if we had six Germans here, and three were from TBB, we would ignore that in constructing the pools? I didn't know that.

Canadian fencers attending NACs are not seeded by their club affiliations.

    A-Jugend = cadet
Q = qualifying event (for German cadets)
"local" is a misnomer: I should have written "local European"

In Germany ME cadets have 3 qualifying tournaments (one of them being part of the Euro CC [cadet circuit]) and a national cadet championship (in December). WE have a similar calendar with different dates, etc.

The event in Bonn is part of the European CC for ME. This circuit is something the CEE (European Fencing Confederation) is trying to develop and promote. Some federations support this initiative by sending an official delegation to some of these events (France and Germany, for example) others do not (Italy).

Italian cadet fencers register on their own and the federation is not sending any official, trainer, or referee to these events. This is why you don't see their top rated fencers or more than 4 Italian fencers.

As to the chance of having 2 of the 15 US fencers in the same initial pool when you have 258 fencers divided in 43 pools of 6, it is a non issue.

Seems that there were only two rounds of pools and no repechage.
    round Vorrunde
    exemptions 0
    round type poule
    number of poules 30
number of fencers per poule <=7
    number of qualifiers 144

    round 1. Zwischenrunde
    exemptions 0
    round type poule
    number of poules 24
number of fencers per poule <=6
    number of qualifiers 120

    round Direktauscheidung
    exemptions 0
    round type direct elimination

We would put each of the Germans in a different pool, just like we would minimize club and Division conflicts. The only time this would matter is if we had more Germans than pools. As long as they're in different pools, club is completely irrelevant.
