Array Don't over train. Even for you youngsters, recovery/rest days are important. As are days spent not fencing. You often get more out of your fencing by training every-other day - with other physical activity on your off-days, or complete rest. You need the break to absorb your training/drilling. However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally take a look at the results. ~ Churchill

I'm somewhat confused. You all sound very committed to fencing and learning/becoming fencers yet somehow, I'm almost certain that I couldn't identify any of you even as someone I'd seen in passing. For better or worse there are only 2 places at best where you can find any real concentration of strong fencing in NC - Charlotte and the Triangle. Do you train, compete, or do anything fencing related in either of those areas ever? I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array Ah! I was going over to the Knights of Siena (Now Knights of Malta) in Morganton, NC until recently.
I am now attending school in London, Ontario, Canada and training with the Varsity atheletes there. Hence why I am getting a lot of training and not seeing anyone in NC In Flanders fields the poppies grow - Between the crosses, row on row, - That mark our place, and in the sky, - The larks, still bravely singing, fly, - Scarce heard amid the guns below. ~John McCrae -

Do you train, compete, or do anything fencing related in either of those areas ever? I fence at WAC sometimes training with john Rae (mostly to train for JO qualifiers), and i also fence mostly at Cape Fear Fencing Association. I am starting to really compete next month with JO qualifiers in charlotte. since im still in high school its difficult to convince my parents to haul me around for fencing. Once i graduate next year i should be going to university of north carolina at charlotte, so i should be fencing at CFA. I also fence at my schools fencing club. Most of the training i do is with the other dedicated fencers in my area and private lessons. "Speak softly and carry a big sabre" OPA! -

Do you train, compete, or do anything fencing related in either of those areas ever? No, but at my current level I don't think it's holding me back. The strongest folks I get to fence around here are generally rated as C's, with just a few with A's or used-to-be-A's that have stopped competing regularly and stick with coaching and the occasional local event. Now, I'm not 100% certain whether this is because these guys are only good enough for a C or because the largest tournaments around here are only large enough to award a C rating, but that's the way it stands on paper at least.
That's not a lot of high level fencing, but given that I'm pretty much just getting started, fencing a C is challenge enough right now. When I'm up to their level then yeah, it'll be time to start looking elsewhere so I don't stagnate, but that's really not my situation at the moment.
