Fencer (vet foil)
Fencer parent (cadet team member daughter (WF), up-and-coming y14 sabre fencer (MS)). No epee 'round here.
Fencing referee - mid-level, used at NACs and Regionals
Fencing administrator - section chair last year, section treasurer this year
former division officer, as well. -

Yes, it takes a village.... -

I find it amusing that people don't want to travel to Vegas for their sectionals - our sectionals typically rotates between Seattle, Portland, Boise or Salt Lake City, and Anchorage. Last season the event was in Anchorage Alaska, a 3+ hour flight that cost about $500 rountrip. While the folks up there do a great job, not many people from the rest of the section went because of the cost.
I'd LOVE to be able to take an inexpensive 1-hour plane ride to Vegas for sectionals!
Dan Thanks for the correction. I date myself by remembering traveling to the SF Bay Area for PCCs from Seattle. -

Yes, it takes a village.... I only asked because a lot of people are posting in terms of their kids... and I can't tell if they are also fencers.
Most coaches and refs have started as fencers.... but not all of them fence actively. For instance, none of my coaches fence any longer, and only one of them ever refs. However, there is one fencer at our club who teaches an adult beginner class and coaches them when they compete, and who refs as well. So he would probably fit the category of fencer/coach/ref.
When comments are made, it might be interesting to know the perspective of the poster, only because we are such a large and diverse group.
My opinion (and my goals), as a veteran fencer who began to fence at 53, is going to be vastly different from say a member of the national junior team who might have aspirations as an elite fencer, whose view is probably vastly different than their own parents (who have surely developed carpal tunnel from wielding that checkbook :-D)
Most of you all seem to know who your alter egos are, because you post all the time. I don't know who any of you are, therefore have no way of knowing if someone is wearing their coaches hat, their fencers hat, or their parental hat. -

This is a regional thread. with most of the posters being from the region, several having belonged to the same club, it stands to reason that we know who most of us are. Through anecdotal stories most of us have figured out who is who, and understand the POV that is behind the post. Though there are a few I still haven't put a name to the SN so I'm left wondering their POV Go to the well until the well is dry. When the well is dry find a new well. -

Several of the posters in this thread are pretty clearly from Northern California. -

evaluna is Evans Lunati. Evans fences vet epee as well.
jjefferies is J Jefferies J does foil and epee.
notalent is Norman Otalen Norm is a newbie in fencing.
seven6ty is Seve Nsixty. I only met this person once or twice.
mfp is Michael Francis Pederson. He's the high-performance director.
misha is Miss Hapniss. Don't know where she fences.
dberke is Dbe Rker. Dbe is from Nigeria and is a manager at a bank, I think. I get emails from Dbe about transferring funds to my account in order to clean out the bank he works at. I think he also fences saber.
Purple fencer is Sam Signorelli, a tuba player for the Wagner Association of Walking Tubists (WAWT).
Hope that helps.

EDEW (= Edward Ewsom, frequent poster and raconteur.) Well, mfp, jjeffries, and wwalkerjr I had figured out because their names are close. EDEW looks just like his photo, so that was easy. Misha I don't know. Dbe also sends me e-mails, but I didn't know he fenced.
Who are bigdawg2121, hologramqueen, piranha, seven6ty, fencerwallet (this sounds like a poor fencer parent - made poor by their child's fencing), flechewounds, and teacup?
I'm guilty of choosing a name that has nothing to do with me, other than it being my favorite fictional character. My real name is Anna Estrada and I fence vet epee (women's), and I live in San Francisco. -

If you want to know who people are, PM them and ask. Some posters are open about their RL identity, some are semi-open, others are semi-private, and some are State Secret private.
Frequent posters who talk about things that happen around them in RL will either start towards the beginning of that list or gradually shift that way de facto. Infrequent posters and those who never discuss anything remotely identifiable (and it's difficult to be a frequent poster without giving enough hints eventually to make identification possible for those who are willing to work for it) can remain anonymous.
Some of the people on your list can be readily identified by reading their posts. Including at least a couple who periodically introduce themselves or sign their posts with RL names.

Array Mathias Uler, at your service.
I operate the local In-N-Out Electronics and Frys Burger locations near you. When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps: -

-B Then there are folks like KD5 that ferret out who is who and update their data base regularly. I'm sure he now has you entered on the spreadsheet
Based off of who you are and where you fence its unlikely you would know FencerWallet or Teacup. FlecheWounds has provided you the info as to who he is. I'm Terry Dix, I have the unfortunate distinction of being PCS chair this year. As such it was ultimately my job to decide where PCCs would be this season. Maybe next year we can goto Hawaii Go to the well until the well is dry. When the well is dry find a new well. -

Maybe next year we can goto Hawaii I have often wondered why PCCs are never in Hawaii!!! Those poor fencers always have to travel for PCCs, not to mention for NACs... and I would LOVE to have an excuse to go to Hawaii.
But Las Vegas has always seemed okay to me. I've always enjoyed Duel, used to go to Las Vegas for backgammon tournaments (before fencing began to take over my schedule), and thought the Alexis was a good venue. Their rooms are suites, very affordable as a share, free of smoke, and yet they are accessible to the casinos if you want to see a show or indulge in other casino type activities.
My sympathies on being the PCS chair... a thankless job.... by the way... when are you updating the web site ? -

Array The problem with HI has been the difficulty in bringing equipment over to the islands. Maybe if every competitor were to bring a part, say a reel or floor cord or just one machine, it could be done. The Hawaii Convention Center is huge, located in Honolulu right next to the Ala Moana Shopping Center and is just a super cool convention center. We can use just a small part of it.
Of course, you can forget shipping over grounded strips. Hawaii division has several old, tired, beat-up copper strips of the roll-up variety, delivered to them about 10 years ago (courtesy of some guy named Eric Dew). And I doubt they can handle any more abuse. On the other hand, it would be a very laid back event (despite it being a qualifying event). Might be able to hire some refs from China or Japan to come by. Heck, I think we can even get some refs from NY or PA or France or Germany to drop by.
But I'm sure the Hawaii natives are dog tired of another sunny day (ok, sunny, rainy, sunny, rainy, sunny, rainy day) and would much rather fly out to Long Beach or Sacramento or even Las Vegas to see something exotic and different. Similar Threads -
