Until someone gets me info, or steps and volunteers to be chair(please do btw) its unlikely to change. Done properly running an event like this can be quite profitable, so I encourage folks to do some legwork, and find venues.
I've asked around and the local convention bureaus just don't want to do business. The San Mateo Convention Center has a large hall and several adjoining halls that are passable for additional rooms for strips. I've called them for several years and can't get past leaving a voicemail on their machine. Amazing.

I don't think most places in SF are suitable because of the high cost in SF proper. Fort Mason is possible, although it's concrete floor. It's a pier about 80 - 100 feet wide and 300+ feet long. I was there for a company holiday party many years ago and looks fine. Because the section is non-profit, they can also give a discounted rate. But again, it seems like one can't get beyond voicemail.

Can I annoy everybody in the state by asking about Sacramento?

Possible in Sac, but I think the infrastructure in Sac is not as great as it once was about 10 years ago. There are two venues, one great one not so great. The great one is where the SN was held. The not-so-great is under a tent-like covering.

Sacramento is similar to palm springs, a sub optimal airport means a higher expense on staff compounded by the distance to downtown, for even more expense. I'm not opposed to going there but since no one gave me a heads up on the venue I didn't consider it. There are plenty of places that should work, but if I don't hear about them I can't consider them. Theoretically Fresno would be ideal, but no one really wants to spend a weekend in Fresno

I took the job knowing that I can't make everyone happy, so I went with the one that made the most sense financially that could accommodate us that I knew of.

I just wanted to propose something that would piss of NorCal and SoCal equally.

Is there actually a regulation that it has to be held within the Section Boundaries? Maybe you can get a good deal on Phoenix or Denver...

Actually, Sacto's airport has reasonable connections (Southwest, among others), but the venue space is of limited quality.

Eric - I had the same experience with San Mateo Convention Center - they simply weren't interested.

My biggest concern with the Alexis is the floors - they are pretty hard (and I don't like putting folks on cement+carpet... my second biggest concern is that it is, for all intents and purposes, mutually inconvenient. But, alas, it will be at the Alexis this year - hard floors and all (which means that daughter won't be allowed to fence it - I'm picky about what I put her knees on)...

Is there something that can be put under the strips to add to the cusioning?? The stuff the SoCal Division used for several years (treadlite?) comes to mind, but the expense of getting enough would probably bankrupt the section.

Yeah - and I don't think that there's enough of it (and frankly, I don't even know where it is living these days). Plus, you need a forklift to move it.

Last time I saw the rolls was when we had events at the National Guard Armory on the west side...they were kept in a storage cage in the loading dock next to the actual venue.

And heavy? Oh yes...when I set up the first tourney in the Burbank Mall across from SwordPlay, I was the one who wheeled them in from the loading dock and set them up...all my myself. Still amazed I didn't throw my back out!

The floor at AP isn't bad. It has good padding, certainly better than most convention center sites. Most of the knee injuries that happen in fencing are due to a slip, stops, or fall incidents. Didn't FW's daughter get hurt csulb? I suppose we could investigate renting metal strips from Sword Masters.

My kid, as well, was seriously injured at csulb. But not directly related to the floor.

Isn't the Pacific Northwest in the Pacific Coast Section? Why is this conversation only about California and Nevada?

Nope, as I understand it, the PNW Section was split off of the Pacific Coast section sometime in the 1980's.

I find it amusing that people don't want to travel to Vegas for their sectionals - our sectionals typically rotates between Seattle, Portland, Boise or Salt Lake City, and Anchorage. Last season the event was in Anchorage Alaska, a 3+ hour flight that cost about $500 rountrip. While the folks up there do a great job, not many people from the rest of the section went because of the cost.

I'd LOVE to be able to take an inexpensive 1-hour plane ride to Vegas for sectionals!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many of the people on this site are fencers and how many are parents of fencers, and is there anyway of knowing that when people post?
