| Remenyik Open-Equipment needs I am relatively new to fencing and I'm going to the Remenyik Open in Chicago, and I am bit unsure on what to expect. What will I need in terms of passing equipment checks. How strict are they going to be? I know they will not be testing Lames, I assume they will be checking body cords and masks. Do you have to have your name on you knickers and if so can you get by with white tape and magic marker?
These are pretty basic questions but it would sure help to know so I don't have to go running around last minute or have to buy something I could have brought with.
Thanks for the help.

| It'll almost certainly be a mask check and nothing else (the last time I recall them doing a lame check was something like 10 years ago). They've typically got 70-100 fencers to get checked in by 7:45 am, with usually just Hugh Cunningham at the armory and some of Laurie's beginning fencers working check-in (and Laurie quite busy just getting all the at-door entries recorded for seeding), so there's simply not the time and personnel to do a NAC-style equipment check. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't give all of your cords, weapons, and lame a thorough going-over beforehand.
It's not a NAC, so no name is required.

| I've been at the Remenyik about the last four or five years. They used to check lames, but did not do so last year. I expect it will probably just be a mask check. The tournament's getting bigger every year, but the folks at Northwestern do a pretty good job of keeping things under control. |

| Thanks for the info. You guys are absolutely correct, mask check only and no name is needed.
They sent me a nice e-mail back confirming all the above.
Maybe I'll see you all there.

| I got CRUSHED, but thanks for asking. I did get my first competition yellow card. My foil didn't pass the weight test. So that's why you should change the springs.
I got some good video and saw some awesome fencing. I'm bringing the tape to our club tonight for show and tell.
They sure did run a smooth tournament, I'll need to practice more and I will return next year to have my revenge!

| L_Marie, there's a really good club in downtown Chicago area called Fencing 2000. Bakyt is a great coach, and if you want to improve your competitive fencing, I would definitely go to him.
Greg, who knocked you out? |

I lost 4/5 of my pools, and got beat 15-10 in the DE's by an unseeded player. I don't remember his name, either o'Neal or O'Leary. He got the second seed next round.
Sincerely,
Paying my dues, Greg Z. |
