Array Online Referee Education - Video-based I ran across this today and figured others might be interested. http://www.dartfish.tv/ChannelHome.aspx?CR=p4791
If you do a channel search for "NFHS" you'll find similar channels for (Ice) Hockey, Soccer, Softball, Football, and Basketball Referee education.
Separately, on the same site, International Team Handball also has videos posted for referee education: http://www.dartfish.tv/ChannelHome.aspx?CR=p4038

Array I know at Pomme this year Mary Mahon was making a video for referee education purposes with some EUF fencers. I don't know what the status or intended use of the video is though. "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -

She is chair of the Referee Development Task Force and has submitted reports to the past couple of Board meetings, including notes of future plans as regards referee development, some of which includes video and online components.
We're moving in that direction, fortunately.

Dartfish is also an excellent video analysis tool, albeit somewhat expensive as one ramps up in features. Velocity Sports uses the system for video analysis and that's where I first was introduced to it (quite a while ago) and most recently I was looking in to it for a coach who was interested in using it for his team. He went with a simpler solution.
Many college teams use it for video analysis of different sports--swimming, gymnastics, etc. To the best of my knowledge (and the sales guy I talked with) I don't know of any fencing teams (college or otherwise) that have embraced the technology. (But maybe Brad is doing that for Temple?) I do know that at least one club in Europe (in France, not sure have to dig out my notes) is using it as they have a "tag panel" you can download that helps you to identify actions in fencing. I think Dartfish was also mentioned in the thread by Craig (or someone else) on video analysis.
It's really quite powerful in its ability to annotate actions with both sound and drawing tools. It actually would make a good tool for an innovative and tech savvy coach to set up virtual coaching for kids that are far away from a high level coach. I could see it being a part of any fencing camp that wanted to send a kid home with a detailed video analysis of what to work on once they left a camp. Or for the camp to setup their own dartfish.tv site for kids to download or use when they get home.
If anyone is interested in the name of my contact at Dartfish that I and worked with in evaluating the software, PM me. You can also download a 30 day trial version from their website at http://www.dartfish.com/en/index.htm
It's a nice piece of software. -------------------

Just received an e-mail from Velocity Sports with this "offer":
COMPLETE VIDEO ASSESSMENT
Let the experts at Velocity take you through a combine and help you improve your performance the way the pros do. Through the use of the Dartfish video capture and analysis system, the staff at Velocity can fine tune your performance, make training recommendations, find injury hotspots and teach you how to better your performance in tests and on the field.
Cost: $59/session
Seems like an enterprising club/coach might form an alliance with a nearby Velocity Sports to help implement a similar service for their fencers. This way you wouldn't have to purchase the equipment and Velocity Sports might form a new relationship in a sport that could benefit from additional training routines. Seems like a win/win to me.
I have no financial interest in Velocity Sports, but know that when I lived near one, they were very helpful to my child's training and open to working with him to design workouts that supported his fencing. This was especially helpful when dealing with the asymmetrical development that was the result of fencing only training.
I know they do a great job reaching out to local school and club teams in other sports. I think they are an untapped resource for fencers and fencing clubs. Perhaps even some kind of partnership with USFA might be beneficial to all. -------------------
