And that's different than the current state of things how? Insurance companies don't stop you from choosing different procedures, they just won't pay for it. Medicare hasn't stopped the elderly from making those choices, why would it work differently for different age groups?

Do you have anything more useful and specific than Socialism = Government = BAD!?

I have zero respect for the media at large anymore, aside from a select few sources. They seem to have lost any sense of honor or integrity.

Do you think Obama would consider not using our air? To help stop global warming of course.

Just wait till year two of his presidency, he plans on taxing the air you breath.

To think outside of the box, what would be wrong with taxing the air we breath? If we have a tax on air, then everyone can just pay the same amount each year. That seems to me very equitable.

Congress clearly has the power to levy taxes so why not a tax on air?

Ah, because the morbidly obese breathe harder and more frequently than a fit person, so the fit types would be subsidizing guys like Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh.
    That would be SOCIALISM!

Seriously, about Palin. Why do people here really hate her!
lets do what the liberals are doing...the opposition to Gov. Palin is only because she is a woman and theyre SEXIST.

seriously i think its disturbing that the country has become so liberal that a true centrist like Gov. Palin is being crucified by the liberal media. people like katie couric are effecting politics without being held accountable and its wrong.

Yeah. Because that would never happen.

{snip} people like katie couric are effecting politics without being held accountable and its wrong.
I'm actually curious here. How do you think Katie Couric should be "held accountable"? In what way? Fired? Arrested? Something else?

Also--what, exactly, is it that you think she did that was "wrong"?

GOL DANGIT! You just made me blow coffee out my nose. Seriously, you need to get your Overton window calibrated. I suspect it is highly skewed.

Wow. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone with negative rep.

    I'm with Philistine here.

I mean, I agree that journalists should tell the truth, and that when they don't, they should correct themselves, or their bosses should say something. And I also think that if certain personalities (be it journalists or pundits) are out of line too badly, they will eventually lose ratings OR sponsors OR both. And then they'll be out of a job. In this particular setting, with plenty of media options, AND the internet as a competing force? I think that if media conglomerates were just a lil bit smaller, we would very easily have enough competition to police the whole thing without intervention. And with the internet becoming a bigger primary marketplace for information, as long as that stays neutral (in the "net neutrality" sense), I'm honestly less concerned with the media conglomerates.

And let's not kids ourselves. The government has a whole of of reasons to want to interfere in the size of the conglomerates. But interfering in particular stations, particular coverage? That *is* a large part of the Fairness Doctrine.

Which, btw, I'm against. .... I'm no longer sure about Chase.

Chase, I'd give you some rep but I know if I had earned that status, I wouldn't want anyone to take it away from me. Congratulations.

couric executed a shameless political ploy to get obama elected by a sucker-punch character assassination of gov. palin.

in case you didnt know, there are laws in this country against slander. she ought to be arrested and sued. since its a liberal organization cbs wouldnt fire her, but we might be able to get sponsors to pull out of her just like they did with glenn beck.

A sucker-punch character assassination of anyone-- assuming that everything that is said is true-- is completely, 100% legal.

In order for it to be slander, it has to be an malicious untrue statement that is stated as fact. When it comes to public figures, you basically also have to prove that the person who said it knew it was untrue.

Couric asked questions. It's hard to ask a question and have it be slander. Not impossible ("How often do you beat your wife" might count....)...

Slander is a tort, and is taken up in civil courts. You cannot be arrested for slander. You could, perhaps, be arrested for disturbing the peace, and you maybe were disturbing the peace by loudly slandering someone, but you would not be arrested for slander.

And it's up to Palin to sue whoever it is that she wants. It's going to be hard for her to win in this country as a public figure. But she can do it. But it's up to her and her legal counsel, not any government authority.

As the incident didn't result in sponsors pulling out then, I doubt they will suddenly decide to now.
