There are a couple of strains of "birther" argument. One is that he was not born in Hawaii (but apparently was part of a plot to make it appear as if he was from the time of his birth forward). Another concedes (at least for the sake of argument) that he was born in Hawaii but contends that since one of his parents was not a US Citizen, he could not be a "natural born citizen" and thus is ineligible for President.
This second argument is more or less equivalent to the arguments that one need not pay taxes because paper money is unconstitutional or because the amendment authorizing the income tax was not properly ratified; or the argument that a criminal court with a flag that has a gold fringe on it has no power to try a defendant--all of which are made with great seriousness (and no sucess) by a number of people.

Birthers are idiots who can't get over the fact that a black man was elected to the office. Morons. -

Array The thing that really kills me about the "birther" issue + the accusations of "liberal media bias" is that if we genuinely had a liberal media, the birthers never would've gotten this kind of public traction. They're treated as though their ideas had at least a toehold on legitimacy! A more honest reaction would be to treat them at least on an equal footing with the kooks (hello, Lou Dobbs) who think black helicopters are going to whisk "patriotic amur'cans" to concentration camps in the Rockies or something. But birthers are given credit for legitimacy because they represent too much of the GOP base, which legitimacy in turn feeds back and amplifies their movement. Geez. -

Array Not to get repetitive here, but sensationalist journalism is a far better/more logical/less conspiratorial explanation as to why they are getting so much airplay, IMNSHO. "I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it." -

OK, here's an actually serious response to the "Birthers": http://travel.state.gov/law/info/info_609.html Acquisition of U.S. Citizenship By a Child Born Abroad Birth Abroad to One Citizen and One Alien Parent in Wedlock: A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301(g) INA provided the citizen parent was physically present in the U.S. for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child's birth. (For birth on or after November 14, 1986, a period of five years physical presence, two after the age of fourteen is required. For birth between December 24, 1952 and November 13, 1986, a period of ten years, five after the age of fourteen are required for physical presence in the U.S. to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child. If, after reading the ACTUAL LAW, and admitting that President's Obama's MOTHER was a US Citizen at the time of his birth, NO MATTER WHERE HE WAS BORN, then there is NO ARGUMENT about his right to hold the position of President based on birth.
PLEASE, can we get back to something productive, like posting to the Thread of Atrotious Advice where people really could use our strong reasoning skills honed in this forum?

Obama's mother did not live "five after the age of fourteen" in the united states. She was 18 when she gave birth.

Lyndon LaRouche? Is that you?
On a more serious note, this revelation underscores the need for a robust public health infrastructure in this country. Only by eliminating toe-fungus from the general population can we hope to defeat this menace. Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Good god man! Just how high up does this go? All the way to the TOP*?

If you want to believe that the Catholic Church just made up a bunch of stories, then that is between you and whatever. It was Jesus that created the Christian Church. And he may have been a practicing Jew until the day he died, but he wasn't after the resurrection on the third day! I pray that one day you will learn the joy of God's love. Peace be with you! I have my facts straight, BB.... beliefs are another story though.

Well, it is a lot of fun watching somebody use as "proof" a document that says KJV is the word of God because - wait for it - it says so itself, and that it must be the one correct translation because of "logic" ("Because God Always Translates Perfectly") that would apply equally to every other translation,
Maybe best of all - because it "Was Translated Under A God-Ordained English King" (kings from ragtag countries out there just don't count) Nice royalist irony combining the last sentence with the American flag icon this site puts up on the browser location bar. We don't need no stinkin' king here, so I guess we're not allowed to translate the Bible.
I sure do get a kick out of people trying to take literal readings of a book based on translations of translations, when even the English language itself has changed substantially since the 1600s. If people weren't so serious about it it would be darned funny.
Capt. Slo-mo: thanks for the "Endorse your world view?" Definitely LOL territory
