    Epee Tip lost?

I got a free epee that needed a new barrel and wiring. It was my first epee. I used it twice and the blade (which is older than I am) broke halfway through the threads on the tip. I tried to tap the piece of blade out with a pin and small hammer, but I'm afraid of messing the threads up too much. I'm wary of drilling the tip especially because I used a mild thread locker. Any foresight would be great. I'm a little short on money and am trying to save the barrel. Everything else is totally fine.

If the tip was held in with thread lock, then soaking it with acetone will help somewhat with getting loose, but the acetone will have to soak through the threads which means very little surface are to attack. Heating the tip might help with breaking down the thread lock, but don't over do it! 300 deg F for about 1/2 hour should do to break down the glue.

As for phyiscally removing the broken part, if you can get hold of a screw extraction set that'd be the easiest way. The other option is to drill out the broken part, but that'll be tough because of the groove. You'll just have to mess with it to see if it'll work. If not, well I'm sure there are some folks that may have a spare barrel around.......

    Done.

Instead of using the pin punch as an extension, I held it vertical, tapping it very gently in a circle to unscrew the blade. It worked very well. On further inspection, I discovered that the tread locker was only in the lower portion of the barrel, mostly in the part that came out of the barrel when it broke. I am relieved to have this, although, buying a new barrel, or getting a spare from someone, wouldn't have been hard or very expensive. Thanks for the advice, I used some acetone to clear out the barrel afterwards.

Ah, now I understand what you did. No problem. Glad it worked out. Do you need info on threading the end of the blade, or have you already done that?
