What I'm saying is very explicit, not the words you try to put in my mouth.

(Emphasis added) Obviously you're ignoring them because that's not what anyone here is saying. Look at Phaeton's post: the loony claims drown out reasonable criticism.

What possible evidence can you have in mind, when the discussion is whether it's appropriate or not to make the kinds of lurid attacks on a public figure's character? It was wrong for lefties to call Bush a Nazi, and it's just as wrong to righties to do the same to Obama.

Besides, what's the point of providing "evidence" to a person who's ignoring responses and brags about it? You throw a lot of chaff out there - like "why isn't the war on the front page", and then when it's refuted you simply ignore it too.

I agree that this is a waste of time. You fit in the "arguing with the dining room table" category.

The quote that every conservative pulls out when he's otherwise losing an argument - or in your case, not even really participating in one. There is intelligent conservative thought out there - but you're not part of it.

Which is funny, because I always felt the quote represented the need to have a conservative and a liberal force - to have a balance between idealism and heart, and practicality. I think when it's used in this other manner it's against the spirit of what it was originally supposed to mean. But, I also don't know what he was thinking at the time... that's just how I read it .

I'm fine with your interpretation. We do need both, after all. I dislike the use of the quote when it's presented as a fairly direct way of saying "you have no brain."

Notwithstanding that the Straw Man in the Wizard of Oz was smarter than the others, "if I only had a brain notwithstanding"

I also suspect that most conservatives are equally ignorant of the history surrounding Churchill's reasons for framing such a quote.

I note that it is not universally accepted that Churchill actually said this since he was a conservative in his youth and a liberal when he was older.

He was a Conservative at age 25. He switched to the Liberal Party at age 29 and was a Liberal at age 35. (He returned to the Conservatives at age 49.) His wife was a life-long Liberal. Additionally, Conservatives and Liberals were PARTIES in the UK, and their platforms do not directly reflect the liberal and conservative positions of left/right politics in America.

    Thanks, Keith, Linda.

I remembered that Churchill crossed parties, but I couldn't remember the order he did it in.
