    Fenceathon

10 years ago, myself and Ray G. of the Chesapeake Fencing Club had an idea. Let's have an all-night-long fencing marathon to raise funds for our club and a noteworthy charity. Were we really going to do this? Well, we did. And coming this October, we'll be doing it again as CFC in Baltimore holds its 10th anniversary FENCEATHON to benefit our programs and the Sisters Academy of Baltimore (http://sistersacademy.org), an independent Catholic middle school for girls (grades 5–8) from low income neighborhoods in Baltimore, Maryland. The FENCEATHON will be held in the gymnasium of the Liberty Christian School at 11303 Liberty Road in Owings Mills. Registration 7-8 p.m. with fencing beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16th and continuing until 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17th. Highlights include electrical fencing in all three weapons (foil, saber, epee), swordplay demonstrations, door prizes, food/refreshments, music, videos, etc. Registration for participating fencers is $30 and includes 10th anniversary commemorative t-shirt. Call 410-532-7445. We always have a great time at this event and other clubs have noted our example and started similar "fenceathons." Check it out, it's a great event!

    all night fencing

Many years ago, we had the most important College Fencing tournament in the state of Texas, at SMU. One year, my folks decided to see their first fencing tournament and drove from Abilene to Dallas to see the tournament. The tournament started at about 9:00 AM on a Saturday and I warned my father these tournaments could sometimes go on and on, sometimes even until midnight! He said, "I know I won't be up until midnight".

We fenced all day and into the night and I won the tournament. We finished at 5:00 AM on Sunday. My dad was there till the very end.

The next year, the tournament was much better organized, but they added more more weapons. We fenced all day and into the night. I won the tournament again, and we finished at.............5:00 AM. My folks were up the whole time, again.

This was also back when the gym was not airconditioned and it was really hot. Everyone was soaking wet and one of the girls with braces had problems. Whenever she was touched, her mouth would spark and light up her mask from the inside. She really learned to parry that night.

Hmm, now that gives me an idea to improve my parrying. Where did I leave that conductive oil?

As for your father, he must have been a very proud parent indeed! Anything past midnight is pure love in my book
