Knickers . . . This has been bothering me for about six years now. I'm from the UK originally and the word "knickers" refers to frilly women's underpants.
No joke.
I just thought everyone would like to know what they've been saying all these years. That's why I always giggle when people talk about their "knickers."
"I'm going to try on my new knickers today!"
I usually say "fencing trousers" or "fencing pants" (even though the word "pants" also means "underpants" in the UK, everything means underpants in the UK.) But I think I'm going to start saying, "fencing panties" from now on, and see how everyone acts when I say it. -

Array Some of us know this, and continue to say "knickers" and "pants" just to make y'all crazy. -
Cappy, you may find that the English speaking world, as opposed to the USA, refer to fencing breeches.
Sounds much more solid, a large degree of gravitas, unlike the pantywastes. -

Array Nobodies cares about the UK or what they laugh at. That's why we continue to say knickers, because we don't care.
You may giggle, but it seems we don't care, and we continue to say it anyway. That's likely because we don't care. If it seems like the U.S. doesn't care about the UK's opinion about the words the U.S. uses colloquially, it's probably because U.S. really doesn't care.
"You mean to tell me that some words mean one thing in one language, and something in another language? WELL I'LL BE, GOV'NA! WOULD YOU LIKE A SPOT O TEA WHILE YOU WRANGLE WITH SUCH A conflict IN LANGWIDGE? oh wait we can have us a lil puff, i'll just go get the fags from the boot of my car. By jove! let's have that with some bangers and spotted cock? SPLENDID!"
Nobody cares about the friggin UK. Black people and hip-hop define what's cool and accepted nowadays.

Array If we've learned anything from across the pond, it's that you should never engage the enemy on two fronts. Everyone relax cause I got it.... -
Well, it seems that he has gained his English venacular from watching The Simpsons, so I have little doubt that his socio-political analysis would do the State Department proud. -

I thought some of the fencing men out there wouldn't mind seeing some of the fencing ladies walk around in frilly underwear... Fencing is all about hooking up and scoring.
Has anyone seen a god around here who is of the reflecting kind? -

Array Can you get a 350N thong? -
In Australia, thong refers to flip slop sandals (which are called jandals in New Zealand).
Isn't it a wonderful world of language differences-- with no chance of confusion or misunderstanding.

Array Well, I was going to start a new thread or revisit an old one about the un-common language. But as I am ollllld and slloooooooow and don't know no better, I'll put it here. But are the rest of you familiar with the following now pase' words/phrases??
tweakers:
Haul (my/his/her) ashes:
Drank the cool-aide:
The first refers to meth abuses, the second (from my youth) with sex, the last comes courtesy of the Reverand Jim Jones and it was used to me to mean to imbibe of vitriol.
I say pase' because they've been used in print and that usually means they're beyong the pale for the movers and shakers of language. -
