    fencing close to NIH?

I know there used to be a club at NIH in Bethesda but it is no longer operating. Are there any other clubs fairly close? I'm going to be spending some time at NIH and my daughter will be with me. She would love the chance to fence at another club. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Your daughter is welcome to visit the Chevy Chase Fencing Club. We are four miles from NIH at Connecticut Avenue & McKinley St., NW.

During August we are meeting Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7:30-9:00pm. Epee on Tuesday & Thursday, foil on Wednesdays. In September we resume our 5 times per week schedule.

A full uniform and equipment is required. We fence electronically at all practices. A floor fee is charged to guest fencers.

See http://www.fencer.com for details and directions.

Also check out DC Fencer's club (contact info at dcfencing.com). Are you coming to the area for a week in Aug.? For a year? Do you want lessons? Or just one or two nights of fencing? What weapon(s)?

My daughter's main weapon is foil. She dabbles in sabre. She has been unable to fence since April 30th because of shoulder surgery. She can start again the last week of August so she is trying to grab every single opportunity she can.

The first trip to NIH is just overnight and my daughter will be with me. The next trip, probably late Sept or Oct, will be a three day one and I don't think my daughter will come. The last trip, in Oct, will just be one day. I'm doing a drug trial for a new drug for a tremor condition called Essential Tremor (http://www.tremoraction.org/).

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    Nanette,
I wish you the best of luck in the clinical trial. I go to NIH about 3-4 times per year as I work as a consultant. I have been twice at the Chevy Chase FC, which is a very nice facility with several competitive fencers, and a great environment for Cadet and Junior fencers. I recommend you to go there.
    Regards,

NIH fencing club is now housed with the Rockville Fencing Academy http://www.urfencing.com/ There is open fencing Sunday afternoon (c-level) and wednesday (A- level). I am a foil fencer and I checked around when I re-started 6 months ago and this is the only club in the area that has a lot of good foil fencers accross a good range of skills. Must of the other clubs don't have a lot of open foil or are Epee focused.

If you want sabre, go to DCFC. Its the best sabre club within 100 miles.

DCFC, where I have been fencing over the summer, isn't going to be much help with regard to foil, I'm afraid. However I've fenced foil in the past at Chevy Chase and found them to be a friendly and competetive group, and I know some very strong foil fencers who are members of the Rockville fencing club.

P.S. I hope you will find success with the proposed treatment! Good luck!! :-)

If the Virginia side of the river is not too far for you, try Dominion. It's a relatively small club, but they have a good range of foil fencers. (check their website for days and locations -- their in a temporary summer situation at the moment but will be back up to their full schedule in September.

You're also welcome to visit Olde Town in Alexandria. We're also small, but some nights it seems like we have nothing BUT foilists.

Thanks for the plug Wayne. I didn't respond to this thread initially because, by most standards, Dominion (in Northern Virginia) is not "relatively close" to NIH. Given the variablities of Beltway traffic, we might be quite a haul from Bethesda. Chevy Chase is pretty close, and Rockville isn't a bad bet.

But, of course, we're always happy to see new faces at Dominon

It takes me five minutes via the back roads to get to DCFC from Bethesda, but there isn't much foil there these days... Epee and sabre is wonderful though...

Its not many clubs where I can see a full room of epee fencing, and be looking around trying to find a guy who does NOT have points in his/her respective age category...
