| E Cigarette Okay, most of you have probably heard of these. If not, give it a Google, there are plenty of articles out there.
In short: It's a nicotine vaporizer that looks like a cigarette.
Does anyone have any experience with these? Know anyone who does?
My main questions are: - How much do they "feel" like a real cigarette?
- Does it satisfy "the urge"? Mostly? Better than a patch?
- Do people give you crap about using them in public places?
- Anything you'd like to add, recommend, or comment on?
I'm looking into getting one of these for my Mom. She smokes like a chimney with no will or real want to quit, however I think I could get her to convert over to these.
Anyone?

| I've heard they have less of a lot of things, but I've also heard they have lots more of other bad things.
Just get her some Swedish snus. It ain't perfect, but I'm told it does the trick and some very nice studies have come out regarding it.

| It certainly makes it better for people who live with smokers who don't like the secondhand smoke!
I guess I'm weird though, I actually like the smell of the secondhand smoke. Our "break patio" at work almost always has someone there lighting up...I'm just used to the smell and have come to not mind it.

I actually like the smell of cigar or pipe smoke...
Maybe I'll just give the snus a go... cheaper to try, I suppose...

I am told the Camel Snus is very sweet compared to the true swedish brands. My friends mostly order from here http://www.northerner.com/

| Keep in mind that even if she switches from regular cigarettes to snus, she'll still be taking in nicotine. The only real advantage with snus is that there's no evil second hand smoke coming from it.
...which of course is a great benefit to her family and house environment, pets etc. However, if she is wanting to eventually give up nicotine altogether she will have to cut down on the nicotine quantities. The thing with snus is that it can be hard for her to actually cut down, as she might find it difficult to adjust her intake.
If she still wants to try snus I might recomment the Göteborgs Rapé. It has a taste of juniper and is rather popular among the female "snusers". Also 'General White' and most of the flavours of the 'Catch' snus are particularly favoured by women "snusers".
Of course I would not recommend nicotine to anyone, but with snus she will at least keep her (ab)use within her own body and not affect others.
Good luck to your mum, hope she can quit it eventually.

| Ps. If you get her snus you might want to go for a kind that has the little "portion bags". It's going to be messy and dirty before she learns how to properly squeeze a "lump" of regular loose snus. Just a tip.

The main reason we're looking for a switch is that she has breathing issues (shocking). Quote: |

| Yeah... basically if you aren't using tobacco in any form there is 100% no reason to start...
I'm hoping that the E-Cig or snus may at least be a somewhat safer option (not safe, but saf er). Quote:

She gave the Camel Mellow a shot (it's locally sold) and said she had a hard time putting up with the initial burn (sensitive gums). Guess I'll give the E-Cigs a shot next...
It wasn't a total fail, though. I was able to convert my cooworker (a dip user) to snus. MUCH cleaner .

Anyone? | There are a number of options, but I think the Commit lozenges are your best bet.
- The patches deliver continuous nicotine which is not good, and some people experience rashes and irritation.
- The nicotine gum is hard to use properly because you're not actually supposed to actively chew it, so people end up getting too much nicotine.
- The new e-cigarette is an interesting idea, but it perpetuates the habits associated with smoking which is what you're trying to get away from in the long run.
The Commit lozenges are nice because you can just suck on them as much as you need to but then pop them out when you've had enough. Plus they taste horrible!!! This discourages people from sucking on them and reminds them that the idea is to NOT enjoy your nicotine fix.
Some people still have a hard time weening themselves off the nicotine replacements, but my philosophy is that a lifetime of using nicotine lozenges is far safer for you than a lifetime of smoking. This is because there aren't any known dangers from nicotine; it's the smoking of tobacco and associated carcinogens that are the health danger.

I'd like her to, but she doesn't really have any will to quit. Similarity to the habit would actually be a good thing in this case, as it would be an easier transition.
Now maybe, juuuust maybe, if she switched to the E-cigs we might be able to step down to lozenges or somesuch after... but at this point she can't (won't) take that big of a step...
Thanks for the suggestion, though! Quote: |

| I think that's the idea behind the e-cig. You are simply vaporizing a nicotine/water (or something water-esque) solution, so aside from addiction there aren't any huge ill effects. Whether it actually delivers on that idea, I'm not sure yet, but it looks promising anyway...

Appealing enough to get her to try them, and a much safer (though not perfect) alternative to real tobacco.
Good luck!!

| Thanks. Yeah... who knows? Maybe after that we might even be able to get it down to nothing over time...
