As long as we're nominating, I would nominate Army Fencer, as well. Inq does raise a valid concern, but a concern is all it is. Gladius gives more expertise in one post than most people do in their whole tenure at fnet.
IMO, the title fencing expert should be a sign that fnet endorses the information on fencing coming from that person instead of a my-dick-is-bigger badge. In the former, I think Gladius is qualified; the latter, I don't know.
Yeah, I think that to be an expert in a subject you have to know that subject. In fact you have to know it better than most others do. No amount of study or watching others do will substitute for doing. I am not going to be an expert on physics no matter how much Einstein I read and how many episodes of Nova I watch. No more can you be an expert on fencing without having fenced. It's only a conceit of the modern age and the blogging culture that it's somehow possible to become an expert by osmosis...

Indeed, where would we be if we didn't know which authorities to appeal to.

I don't disagree, Inq. I said "active fencer" as compared to retired fencer.
I agree that his posts are interesting and thought-provoking, and he presents a lot of valuable information. But he's really more of a reporter and observer than an "expert".
I mean, if I knew Steven Hawking I could pick his brains and post the results, but it wouldn't make me an expert on theoretical physics...

And I don't think there's anything wrong with the title Fencing Journalist either.
Certainly not. I was not trying to be mean or diminish his contribution, but rather to clarify that what he brings to the table is fundamentally different than what most of the 'fencing experts' do.
