This is Cool Coaches at the 1979 Jr. Olympics

I was going thru some old photos this past weekend and I found this one.

    http://www.fencing.net/forums/member...r-wheeler.html

In it you will see me and a very young Wilbur Wheeler after our bout at the 1979 Jr. Olympics. The Championship was hosted at Harvard in the indoor tennis courts...and it was very cold that February.

In the background, you can see my Master, Hall of Famer Nick Toth in a black hat and a very young Bill Reith.

    That's Wilbur Wheeler?

    hmmm....

I've heard a few stories over the years, but had NO idea he was that small. Seems like it should have come up at some point.

Thanks for the picture. Much appreciated.

    Cheers.

I think he was about 10-years-old in this photo. As I recall, this was his first Jr. Olympics. He went on to win several Jr. Olympics in foil....I was afraid I would be unable to hit him in this bout....he was very fast.

I kept my point in line and used epee tactics....I managed to squeak out a win.

I really miss Wilbur, who I haven't seen in years. I started fencing at Bill Reith's club and worked primarily with Wilbur. I really can't say enough good about him. He was always increadibly patient and nice. I also remember when Jon Normile was in town at the little tournament Bill has every December and Wilbur beat him to win the Epee

I guess I should look Wilbur up next time I'm in CA.

    Edit:
Wilbur really is short, but he moved in a way where he looked like he picked up his toes and then hovered just above the strip. Incredible control of distance and VERY quick.

    Sumpm' don't jive.
If he's 10 in that picture - he's 40 today, and I'm sure that he was 40 quite a bit ago.

I googled around and found an article that describes him as 16 years old in 1983.
