REMEMBER, you must be fully registered to get one of the 28 positions at each preliminary event. And registration means payment. It's not enough to merely add your name to the list as a "maybe." Someone else pays first, it's tough noogies for you.

If you're actually good enough to win first place in all seven preliminary events, and finish up with the gold medal in the big finale, that's a cool $12,000 additional income before Summer Nationals next year.

SPECIAL PRIZE: Any fencer who is not scored on during all the Direct Elimination bouts of any qualifier or the Championship will be awarded a 2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE!
Any fencer who is about to win the Cadillac Escalade should immediately be investigated for collusion with all of his/her opponents.

If I were anywhere near OK City I'd probably go to these.

28 fencers * $50 is $1400. You're giving $1000 in prize money, so you'll only make $400 even if you fill all 28 slots. Lot of trouble for $400, eh? But wait, there's more:

For the championship you're giving away $8000 (!!). Is the entry still $50? If so, it's likely you'll have something more than $1400 coming in due to the fenceoff on the first day, but the break even point is, uh, 160 fencers? Wow. So, it's unlikely that you'll break even. Wow.

Limo business doing well these days, is it?

I mean, this is amazing, this is a lot of money. People say everything's bigger in Texas, but you may win this one, I don't see anyone here putting up prize money like that. Heck, I may drive my sad old tired butt up there just for a chance to fence a really good pool and one DE.

So, you know. Kudos. Might one request the finals on youtube? With commentary, from someone who knows something about epee?

As an afterthought, I know nothing about amateur status these days; is this a danger to any high-level athlete's status to fence in an amateur event like the Olympics? Is there any reason Seth Kelsey or someone like that couldn't come down and fence, for example?

The Olympics are not an amateur event.

The FIE has no restrictions on professional/amateur status, therefore US Fencing does not. The NCAA (and many scholastic governing bodies) of course do, which would make accepting the prizes for this series very difficult for anyone who plans to fence NCAA or is currently an NCAA fencer.*

    * The quick version is that a current NCAA fencer would not be able to accept the prize; a prospective NCAA fencer could accept a prize up to but not exceeding the actual and necessary costs to participate in the tournament, which are likely to be well under $1,000. (NCAA Div I rules. I'm less familiar with the amateurism regulations for II/III)

Not that everyone will be interested in the championship, of course. (Or think they're good enough to even have a chance.) Each monthly prelim is going to be a valuable opportunity in its own right.
Yeah. I have a place to stay in Denton, so you may see me every once in a while if I can make myself get on the bike and get my legs back in some kind of shape. It looks like a good place to crank up my game a bit, even if I have few or no illusions about actually winning any money.

quick question for you, brad -- what if they took the money and put it into a gift certificate?

If your question is about the NCAA ramifications, this is a question I have asked the Temple Compliance Office.

A gift certificate is cash, as far as the NCAA is concerned. There are a number of tournament organizers that believe that gift certificates are completely fine and would not affect a collegiate student's (or prospective college student's) eligibility. This is NOT true.

Of course those without NCAA eligibility concerns can still accept cash prizes or gift certificates. Or, for that matter, be paid appearance fees to compete in tournaments.

Oh, I won't guarantee that a different compliance officer wouldn't provide a different opinion.

That said, I did ask the question in unambiguous terms and got an immediate and very certain answer.
