Array I didn't miss it, I ignored it.
Unlike you, I don't think there are many times when name-calling is "appropriate". ( Maybe when someone does it to you first, though even then I try to avoid it. ) IMO it just lowers the tone of the dialogue...
And there are so many other more witty ways of expressing...ah...uncivil sentiments.
But if you're going to behave yourself now, I'll answer the rest of your post.

Array Willfully ignoring an argument because someone made a boo-boo to your ego (or because you feel being more "polite" puts you on higher moral ground) seems...silly. But carry on.
I feel name-calling is fine as long as it's not excessive (and deserved, though admittedly that's by my standards, not yours), and as long as there is an argument present as well. I also try to only say online what I would not have a problem saying to someone in real life. My friends and I tend to be quite blunt with each other, and I prefer it. Since it bothers you so much, however, I shall endeavor to speak with flowery politeness. "Preparation is the soul of tactics. And tactics are the soul of fencing."-Aladar Kogler -

Array Man: Look, I CAME HERE FOR AN ARGUMENT, I'm not going to just stand...!!
Mr Barnard: OH, oh I'm sorry, but this is abuse.
Man: Oh, I see, well, that explains it.
Mr Barnard: Ah yes, you want room 12A, Just along the corridor.
Man: Oh, Thank you very much. Sorry.
Mr Barnard: Not at all.
Man: Thank You. (Under his breath) Stupid git!!
(Walk down the corridor)
Man: (Knock)
Mr Vibrating: Come in.
Man: Ah, Is this the right room for an argument?
Mr Vibrating: I told you once.
Man: No you haven't..............

Array Back to the original topic for a minor second. Why not a layer of neoprene about 2/3's of an inch thick? Stops most of the pain and has a level of resistance akin to arm muscle* might work for a forearm/back of hand pad. Only question is where to buy a sheet of it?
*Sample 2, my right and left arms. Left forearm stronger than right by a moderate margin. -
