Something to wear under jacket Dear all,
I'm looking for a thin, smooth, anti-moisture long sleeved undergarment of some sort. So that the jacket and/or body cord does not rub against the skin. I've seen the underarmour line, but some of it looks like you would be rather hot in it. Any concrete suggestions?
Thanks! -
The UnderArmour garments are designed to keep you cool. They wick away moisture. Much cooler and lighter than a t-shirt. The spirit is willing, but the fleche is weak. -

Array There are some nike dri fit long-sleeved shirts which are nice and thin and breathable. -Sabresque

Array The UnderArmour things can be snug, and look fairly dreadful on almost any body, and there is the odd feeling that they are wet on the outside, but they are not hot at all (especially compared to T-shirts). I like them. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -
Hmm, I guess UnderArmor it is then... -

Array UnderArmour is good - as is the Nike DryFit and Adidas ClimaCool. I have some of each and they perform well and are much cooler than t-shirts. UnderArmour does look bad on most everyone - Nike and Adidas have more forgiving cuts in the shirts and I prefer the feel of that fabric. Array Nothing comes between me and my BG. Nothing.
Except my top, under armour, t-shirt, chest protector and plastron. -

I like UnderArmour. They make tight ones if you have a pentathlete's body or looser fit if you don't.
You'll still sweat like crazy, and the shirt will be very wet if you fence hard... but it does not get as "clamy" as a pure cotton T-shirt.

I've just got the sleeveless UnderArmour that I wear under my plastron. It's certainly not flattering, but A) it's under my gear, so nobody sees it and B) if it's comfortable, who cares?
Also, if you get the UnderArmour, make sure you don't accidentally get the cold weather gear. That would be terrible under a jacket. "I'll be walking down the street and people will say, 'What a nice fur coat, what a nice fur coat'
and I'll say, 'I'm not wearing a fur coat, I'm covered in rats." -

Array Anyone wear silk anymore?? Thin, cool, comfortable. I hate the texture of some synthetic stuff made for sports ... very sensitive to textures am I. Spends way too much time here -

Array I don't like high-tech fabrics under a jacket and lame.
They don't absorb sweat, and if you sweat a lot, you feel like you are swimming, because the sweat doesn't have anywhere to go.
Plain old cotton T-shirts work best for me--at a tournament, I change my T-shirt after each pool and each DE. Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point. -

Thanks! If you're any good with a sewing machine, you could always create a little "sleeve" for your body cord out of an old t-shirt (kinda like a body cord cozy or something). Array I have three Nike Dri-Fit shirts. Love them. I have a couple of UnderArmour shirts, and maybe I'll wear those if I'm wanting to show off a bit , but mostly I go with the Dri-Fit shirts.
Have you looked at the Champion C-9 series at Target? They have some dri-fit-type clothing that's pretty good. They make it in both mens and womens' lines, though selection will depend on what time of the year it is As far as cost goes, you can't beat it unless you find a sale or a Nike Outlet. I did - on the lower half - but it didn't move freely and by like the 3rd day, seams were pulling. (made for some interesting ventilation.) I have several of these for daily wear... instead of thermals... because of the seasonal varieties. -

Array I wear the Russel Athletic short sleeved shirts, and they work well. They suck moisture out to your jacket, where I cannot feel it, and when you do not have a jacket on, they dry very fast. I like mine small so that there is no loose fabric, which I find very annoying while fencing. I have one long sleeve and I find it a little constricting and hot.

Make sure you get the HEATgear line. I wear a long sleeve shirt and a mesh skull cap to keep the sweat out of my eyes.
as for how it looks.. I don't really care. I'm not there to impress anyone with my physique (or lack of). -

Array Don't the properties of the Underarmour (and other wicking fabrics) mean that the moisture travels outward and soaks the jacket quickly? Would that cause a problem? -

Array It depends on what line of Underarmour you wear. Some of them are designed to keep you warm. When love bites, be sure to bite back.
