MF notes: This is the third FIE competition Baldini has won in a row, out of 6 since returning from his suspension. It should bump him to 6th in the world from 10th, and within four points of being tied for 4th.

Kruse jumps to 3rd in the world. One might say he has had a good season.

Also, is there any sort of backstory to Cassarà losing 15-3 for 16s? He didn't look injured in the tiny clip currently on federscherma.

Q.: Andrea Baldini wins again the European title he won in Gand in 2007 and forgets what happened in Kiev in 2008...

Baldini: Yes, yes, let's say that with this competition I've closed that chapter once and for all which had precluded me to compete at the Olympics. From now on or better from the previous 2-3 competitions I won, I hope that I can resume the race leading to London 2012 and still believe in the dream.

Q.: Earlier on you told me that what is different this year is that you've found a certain serenity when you are about to fence an important bout.

Baldini: Yes, yes, it's a kind of "fencing serenity." Before I used to be more impetuous because I wanted so badly to excel and maybe this did not always help me to be lucid in the most important moments. Now my desire to win is even more than before but I also take this sport with a bit of "philosophy" so by being more relaxed I can see more clearly and I can score the winning touch when it counts.

Q.: And this time you beat Peter Joppich your historical adversary who had beaten you in your last 3 important encounters...

Baldini: Yes, finally! And it was 15-14, I had to do it. At 14-o it was an attack at the end of the strip at his last meter which is the zone where he is the strongest and he was waiting with a parry riposte. This time I succeeded with my attack and I'm happy, very happy about it.

Q.: And I was talking to your coach, Maestro Paoletti who was very emotional and he told me that the toughest thing was working the mental angle and this victory is the coronation of all this work after a very hard year and lots of pain and suffering.

Baldini: Eh, yes, he's right. We had difficult times, hard times, but in the end this sport is good and healthy and I had plenty of support from many who trusted me so I had to start all over again to continue in the pursuit of my objective which I have ever since I was a little boy, to go to the Olympics.
