New to fencing, too

I am a big fencing fan ever since I read many years ago about how the USA had not won a medal since 1952 or 1956. I had a fencing class in colllege but that was many years ago. I was excited to see so much success this past Olympics. Is it possible for over 50 aged fencers to compete - do they have their own division? I am considering starting to learn again and it might be fun to actually fence against somebody else!

Yes. There are divisions ( called Veterans ) for 40-49 years old, 50-59 years old, and 60 and over ( for the moment---probably headed for a 70 and over category ). In all three weapons, for men and women. The 50-59 and 60 and up categories also qualify teams to the Veteran World Championships.

How do the age groups go, per se? Also, what are the ages for the Junior Olympics?

Welcome!

The US Fencing website has a page that includes a table (for national events) here.

There's also a (generally useful) document called the "Athlete's Handbook", found here. The second chapter, as well as Appendix 02, outlines the characteristics and entry requirements for the various competition types (the whole thing being too long to copy here).

The short answer to the first question is on the aforementioned table, and on page 10 of the Athlete's Handbook (the 18th page of the PDF file).

The short answer to the second question is:

Quote:
Age Requirements – NAC & Junior Olympic Championships
Subject to the exceptions in Appendix 2.1, fencers must be 13 years old by January 1 of the current season; if younger must be on the Cadet point standings at entry deadline. For Junior events, fencers must be under 20 years old as of January 1 of the current season. For Cadet events, fencers must be under 17 years old as of January 1 of the current season; if younger be on the Youth 14 point standings at entry deadline.
As for the Veterans events (as asked about in the opening post), that info starts on page 25 of the Athlete's Handbook (the 33 page of the PDF file):

Quote:
There are 4 categories of veteran events: Combined (ages 40 and above), V40 (ages 40-49), V50 (ages 50-59), and V60 (ages 60 and above). At veteran competitions at NAC tournaments, Combined, V50, and V60 are held. V40, V50, and V60 events are held at the Summer National Championships. Points are awarded for these competitions. See Chapters 3 and 4 for more details on how points are awarded and calculated.

Eligibility (age, classification)

Combined: Must be at least 40 years old as of December 31 of the season.

Age eligibility for the separate age categories is governed by the FIE’s rules for the Veteran World Championships (specifically V50 and V60).

V40: Must be at least 40 years old as of December 31 of the current season, and must not have reached 50 years old as of the first day of the month in which the Veteran World Championships will be held (typically the September after the Summer National Championships).

V50: Must be at least 50 years old and no older than 59 years old as of the first day of the month in which the next Veteran World Championships will be held (typically the September after the Summer National Championships).

V60: Must be at least 60 years old as of the first day of the month in which the Veteran World Championships will be held (typically the September after the Summer National Championships).
As for the issue of "current season":

Quote:
USFA membership is required to compete in any USFA sanctioned event. The membership year begins on August 1 and ends on the following July 31. All dues are payable on application for membership and thereafter on or before the next membership year begins. Membership dues are not prorated at any time. Renewals processed at any date beginning August 1 will expire July 31. A new member joining the USFA for the first time for 1 year, whose dues are paid between April 1 and July 31, will be entitled to membership through the next membership year.
The last sentence is underlined for the benefit of the new fencers...

Also, note that the Athlete's handbook is updated yearly...

Additionally... welcome, Sandy2017!
