Sarah Palin stepping down as Governor of Alaska

    See http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/07/03/palin/index.html

Speculation as to why, folks? Free up time to make money on lecture circuit and then try for a 2012 nomination for Pres? I listened to her announcement and it was full of mugging for the camera and perkily reciting cliches. I couldn't get any content out of it.

This trick is to have content in addition to the slogans. Obama does, and he's articulated that during the campaign and again as president. Palin - well, she does the slogans with enthusiasm, but she doesn't demonstrate any knowledge or content.

Preparing for a 2010 run at the Whitehouse. Why 2010? 'Cause that's how she rolls also.

I sense a scandal looming. Perhaps she's trying to avoid something coming out by fleeing the ring?

I have to agree with Ed Rollins. If she thinks she's got any sort of chance at the Presidency in 2012, this is not a smart thing to do, unless "there's another story". ( Not but that I think she's a bit delusional if she thinks she's got a shot in any case, but then. )

I can't buy Brad Woodhouse's false dichotomy, though. There are more than two equally bad possible motives.

    "One time at Governor Camp..."

I think she is going to be one of the undisclosed Governor Sanford dalliances, but she's not his soul mate, so she's distraught...

    I agree with this.

She could have finished out her term in 2010, and still had plenty of time to run for prez in 2012. There is something else going on here.

Of course, it could be something as simple as making more money (with less work and few headaches) on the circuit than she makes as governor.

It would be, except I suspect she might just be mavericky enough to actually try it.

Another possible reason for her abdication:

After steamy affair with Samuel (Joe the) Wurzelbacher (Plumber) she is now knocked up with a profoundly stupid and hauntingly bald love child.

Darn, step away for a few hours, and all the good wisecracks are taken!

I also wonder if there's a scandal - I immediately thought "she's carrying Governor Sanford's love child, or has a pay-to-play deal with Blago". The alternative is "go cash in and make big bucks, and test the waters later"

Like Inq, I agree with Ed Rollins take that this is bad for a White House bid. The attack on her will be "times were hard, so you quit". I expect she'll make fabulous money on the lecture and fundraiser circuit, and then put out feelers in 2010 to see if she has a shot for national office.

Ha! ha! ha! Gotta respect a maverick (even the ones that turn the word 'maverick' into a verb) though, they make their own rules and break a few along the way

Rule #24 - If you get outted, leave calmly. Do not run.
Rule #107 - Know when to abandon ship if it ain't floating.

I think it depends on the economy. The "change" that the American people want to believe in is the change that lowers the unemployment rate and raises disposable income.

If the economy is recovering, Obama will get re-elected (assuming the Republicans don't find a strong candidate in the intervening years). If it's still tanking, Obama will get thrown out, just like Carter.

I do agree with you that I see alot of Carter in Obama. Both saw themselves as populists and international diplomats. Let's see if Obama avoids Carter's mistakes.

Obama is in a perfect position; things are bad at the beginning of his administration.

Odds are good that things will rebound nicely in time for him to get re-elected.
