Hi! Total noob :) Hello everyone.
I'm pretty new to fencing. I took a stage combat class in college and we learned some basics there. I always wanted to learn and that really boosted my interest.
I'm thinking of getting a sabre as my weapon of choice. It seems like my type I'm very thin and need something lightweight as well. I've looked up classes online that I might take this summer or the next (where I also came across this site!).
Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'm still very new and am not familiar with a lot of the terminology. I know a bit about how to parry and attack and things like that, having taken that class in college, but nothing that would really help me if I wanted to compete.
Anyways, I look forward to getting to know some of you and will probably be lurking most likely. Maybe if I get enough practice I might be worth my beans to help some other noobs out. Thanks for reading! -

Welcome.
This place is a great source for good information and bad advice. You'll see what I mean.
Yeah, it's fun to "hang out" here as well as research. And the perople are good, despite what I say about them.
I started fencing a number of years ago for fitness. (I knew someone who knew someone sort of thing.) Now, I can't imagine myself not fencing.
Have Fun -

Array Hi Virginia,
Welcome to fencing and welcome to Fnet! You've joined at an interesting time, as the US fencing community is involved in our National Championships.
You're definitely on the right track to learn how to fence. Taking a class and joining a fencing club in your area is the way to go. Here's a link to a list of various fencing clubs around the USA. It would likely be worth your while to perform an internet search specific to your neck-of-the-woods as well.
Relax, have some fun and again, welcome to fencing Often in error. Never in doubt. -

Array Welcome Virginia: You will find the fencing community and this group here on FNet on particular to be an excellent source of support and guidance.
One note, I also did stage combat and whilst it does give you basics, it is a "whole nother thing" when you start to fence for real. The movements are smaller, quicker, very different from what you did on stage.

I've had brain surgery, what's your excuse? Similar Threads -
