The rest of the post from which i quoted was basically a terrific example of "oh my gosh, my previous posts make me look like the scum of the earth, how do i try and spin my words such that it makes me look like i have at least a partially developed sense of responsibility."
I'm absolutely floored that nobody seems to grasp the main points from the terrible events that have happened:
1) Fencing can be DANGEROUS
2) plastrons are IMPORTANT.

We lend our bodies and our well being to one another to practice, have fun, and compete in good faith. If a mask punch or a plastron can prevent catastrophic failure by diagnosis then it MUST be, not should be our ought be... but MUST be done. Do you have your mask checked at every practice session you participate in?
Do you insist that every person you practice with has his/her mask check prior to fencing with him/her? -
I shoulda worn a mask before reading this thread. -

And, relax, you don't get the joke.

The mask test does slightly degrade the mask, which is not a big deal if you do it a couple times a year, and would become more meaningful if done before every touch. Perhaps because, unlike between touches, a mask sits in a fencing bag next to possibly someone's sweaty t-shirt, etc. for a few months.
Between touches, it's kind of sitting on you.
Isn't the slippery slope analogy one of the fallacies of debating? Just because people want a mask test at each competition, doesn't mean they want it tested between each touch, etc. -

Let's be REAL clear about something. I was just trying to return the thread from my threadjacking it.
Don't ever give yourself the luxury of thinking that I give a **** about you or what you think about any topic.
As Christian as I would like myself to be I'm pretty sure that if something so tragic as this happened to you i'd end up sparing no expense on a large party. I'd show your demise on my big screen tv over and over again. My only sorrow would be that I never got you into a MMA ring so I could legally enjoy myself at your expense.
I'll be sure to invite your parents. I'm sure if I had a chance to speak with them they'd tell me it'd be the sum of their existence to erase you from their lives.
You are STILL a coward.

No thanks...I may be a vendor, but I'm also an armorer...and safety is an armorer's first task...and you don't know me well enough to claim I'm doing any sort of bragging. I'm just stating facts.
PS- the fact that you have support from a certain camp is NOT IN YOUR FAVOR.
The fact that that support has come from competitors, fellow armorers, and high level event coordinators -- in the case of the underarms this weekend, at a national/international championship -- gives lie to that statement.
Nope. The Ukrainian kid a few years ago was in a competition, but I can't remember if it was Regional or National level.
I kinda remember that fact as well...darned if I can find the thread, tho.
The real crux of the issue is that Purple feels personal responsibility to help prevent any risk of injury he can,
That's m,y job when I put on the armorerhat...
and seems to also insinuate that others who do not do as he does may be causing injury.
Not entirely....but the mask check IS required in the US (Ops manual, I think...someone found the actual reference once....I'd have to look for it)...and the rules DO give me the right to check any mask I suspect. My personal policy is to suspect every mask...FIE or not. Someone like a Dan DeChaine -- with TONS more experience than I have -- might be comfortable only doing the visual/tactile inspection on an FIE mask (which is all that's required at FIE tourneys -- which the rules are written for), but I do not have that confidence yet.
Other issues -- like the underarm sleeve or the strap -- are ones that should be passed on, and I can get that word out to a LOT more people here than I could if I preached it from a mountaintop every day at Summer Nats.
I may have to write something for American Fencing magazine, tho.... -

Before and after every fencign session I do inspect it for any unusual signs of wear. And yes, i own a punch test so yes it gets punched.
However, I have the LP FIE exchange mask whose mesh is so strong and dense I've never had any issues at all. It doesnt just pass the punch test, it obliterates it!!!
I also make sure that my clubmates know if I think their equipment is substandard. If they still fence its no longer my problem.

Fatfencer Suck it. If you wanted anything to happen, the last thing you should do is say that you wanted it to happen, because NOBODY wants to listen to you, wants what you want, or wants to be associated with what you want.
Your results speak for themselves.
