    Sport Psychology Seminars - Nationals

Dr. John Heil will be holding a series of sport psychology seminars during the 2009 Summer Nationals.

The seminars will be scheduled for July 4th - July 8th when Dr. Heil will be in for Nationals.

These seminars should be similar to the ones at the Atlanta NAC.

Please PM me or respond here if interested. We're finalizing the topics and schedule. Seminars will be an hour and a half and we're working with the USFA to bring down costs so that we can make the seminars very affordable.

There are "Referee Seminars" listed on the SN day schedule. Does anyone know how to register for these?

Usually there's a sign-up sheet either at check-in (probably at the "Info/Coaches" booth or whatever the one that isn't labelled for one of the three weapons is called) or at the bout committee table.

The seminar is run as two halves in the evenings. One needs to attend both sessions for full credit.

Why do I keep leading with my feet in foil?

Why do you think you keep leading with your feet in foil?

Because it's foil. Silliness is key in foil.

This might be totally out of line or show my total lack of understanding of this one 'arm' (so to speak) of the sport, so I apologize in advance, but, Greybeard, aren't you fencing wheelchair these days? How can you be leading with your feet?

Yes I am. I was just trying to be funny not so much. I was trying to repeat the usual cliche' about pyschology.

And actually, now that I am fencing chair, I am finally trying to use my feet. Sheesh. I have to use the strap to hold my legs back or I will get carded for moving my feet off the footrest. Of course, I haven't had to have a "butt judge" yet either.

Craig, the seminars look great, I am very impressed. What are the chances that someone will compile these meetings and let us read some of the ideas and suggestions presented? Also; when I first studied Nutrition, we had a coach who came to our college to do a presentation on sports/nutrition - it was pretty interesting - what are the chances of including a Nutrition/sports seminar in the future - along with the present topics. This is long overdue - it's just great that it finally got off the ground. - We had a little workbook that went along with the presentation. Okay that's it for now.

US Fencing put on a couple a few years ago (One of the January NACs?). They were lightly attended (5-10 people at each).

IIRC, Darius was at the one I attended.

I know what you mean - seminars like that are usually filled to capacity only at ADA conventions - [American Dietetic Assoc.] otherwise, it's difficult to get people in one place to learn about electrolyte balance. The wholeistic approach may be too much for attendees though, try for the brain and the rest will trickle down hopefully to the feet!

btw: someone on the net stole my signature!

The nutrition seminar was not particularly spectacular, and if I recall it was done a bit as a "teaser" for a diet-planning company. You can find superior material on the internet if you sift enough.

Still, doing seminars and such is a good use of time, especially with everybody in one place at one time. Paul Soter used to do an epee day-camp the day after Div 1 events were held, they'd run through a conditioning workout, footwork, drills, and got the USFA to set aside 3-4 strips to fence/train on.

No clue if it made money, but it was useful, and the fencers seemed to enjoy it - that ties in a bit to the National Coach discussions; these types of things will build rapport between the Nat'l Coaching staff and the athletes.
