I don't think Montano's bout with Dumetrescu helped Tarrantino all that much since Montano and Tarrantino's styles are so different. Also, Tarrantinto is one of those fencers that sticks to his own game no matter whom he is fencing...
I would also take Tarrantino's (and Montano's) interview quotes with a grain of salt. They love a good inside joke...for example, when they won the Bronze in Beijing and were asked if they had a plan against Russia, Montano's answer was "They never have a plan, they only fence with their hearts" or somthing like this. They are funny guys. (And great fencers!) -

Interview... From Federscherma TV http://www.atleticomtv.it/federscherma/index.asp?id=385
from 1:41 Tarantino:
Bouts between Aldo and me are always very close: we know each other extremely well, and we know very well what to do with the opponent. Our bouts are always very intense and almost always end at 13 or 14 [for the loser]. This bout [semifinal of the Italian senior national championship] could easily be the final at the world championship because in WC events we finished first and second several time, so this was an important bout. Question for his coach, Dino Meglio:
What do you say to a student, one who has fenced for so many years, what tips/motivations do you give him to continue? Dino Meglio:
Nothing. Just have fun, and he does this on his own anyway. The simple fact that he has fun on the strip guarantees that he'll have still a great future in the sport [he's 37] I'm not kidding! Question for Tarantino:
After your victory at the Luxardo a week ago you said "Aldo and I have something extra." Can you explain what it is? Tarantino:
To me as a fencer this is pretty evident. Aldo and I have some extra "numbers" compared with all the others. We have a different feeling/awareness, we are stronger, we had/have better results, therefore, this gives us peace of mind and self assuredness in what we do. For us fencing is extremely important, we love fencing so it's easy to give our best. -

The post that Tim made right after the quoted post was a reasonable/pertinent response. How does the statement "they train together and think of each other as strong opponents" nswer the question "did one of them losing a bout to Dumitrescu yield useful or tide-turning information for the other in the final"? Pretty sure it doesn't. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array Gladius' input is always valuable, but Tim did answer my question regarding Dumistrescu.
I'm still curious about the Montano/Wang call. -

I'm still curious about the Montano/Wang call. Watch the video. On the last touch, Wang attacks, Montano counter-attacks, but the referee gives it to Montano.
Also interesting is that in the touch immediately prior to that, both fencers come forward, Montano makes parry-riposte, but the referee calls it for Wang.
The bout, overall, is refereed well, but those last two calls are very strange.

Array I watched that part of the video several times. I see them both attack, both pull their arms back, and both go. I thought Wang's arm went first, but I am in no position to second guess the attack/counterattack body-language mojo of an FIE ref.
I think the semi between Limbach and Szilagyi was the most fun to watch. It was very dynamic, had some great streaks, and some excellent replay usage and whining. The blades are also highlighted perfectly by the light so you can see everything. I'm just adding that because it seems like it doesn't have too many views.

Array Sorry for the double post but the play by play commentary towards the end of the Pina v Tarantino bout is pretty funny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZrr9BfxXxA -

Array The whole bout is pretty funny. -

Array True. Lots of shenanigans by Pina. -
I remember Dino Meglio as a fencer. Super emotional even for a Italian. He probably stopped competing just about when Tarrantino was coming onto the scene.
I remember Tarrantino chopping one of the floor cords in two (a couple feet from the machine) at a WC in KCity (back in the 90s) after some machine issues. I don't remember any cards just some laughs. -

That referee is pretty poor to begin with, but I have a feeling there was a lot of anti-Pina pressure on him, possibly because of the Olympics. -
