My first thought was "wait- there are openly gay fencers that aren't on the Smith team???". Then I read the post, and recalled that the Oberlin team is also fond of rainbows. Seriously, other than myself and other Smithies, I'm counting on about one hand.

Are they supposed to register with you or something?

I'm not as well-connected as you are, but for about 80% of the people I see at fencing events, I don't know anything about them except their last name, their weapon, and how they fence. Maybe where they used to fence. It's not like you have to call out sexual orientation on pool sheets "Now fencing, 1 (straight) and 4 (gay), on deck ..."

Actually, the idea has some merit. Maybe we should include marital status as well.

    Nice picture, though.

The (attractive to me) queer women, yes. Yes they are. : P

I'm sure there are plenty of gay fencers among the large number of fencers I don't know. I'm sure there are people that are fencers and gay and I know them but I don't know that they're gay.

But when I look at friend groups I tend to spend time with, even ignoring the place I went to college (which does skew things quite a bit)--- who I spent time with in high school, at certain places I've worked, etc--- I usually spend quite a bit of time in groups of friends where I'm not the only queer.

I'm also used to knowing more often than guessing with regards to the chosen sexual identification of my peers because of facebook. Obviously not the whole story, but certainly some useful clues. Which I suppose really only works well for my peer group.

I haven't been 19 in a while, but I think this pic will be displayed somewhere in my house. Inspiration to be a better fencer and all that....

It's always nice to have company. I wasn't sure how it was going to be received when I came out. It was a non-event, fortunately.
