    Suggest the next foil commentary

Initially I thought about just doing the entire round of 16 from the Olympics, and then the entire round of 8, and 4, and 2, and so on, but then I thought that probably not all the bouts are interesting to many people, and it would be a large time to benefit ratio. Joppich vs. Kruse, for instance, is an enormous wigglefest, which most people might not be that interested in.

So, I hereby ask for suggestions. I have heard Sanzo vs. Ota, which is intense, but it might be useful to set that up with Sanzo vs. McGuire, so as to understand what Sanzo is all about. (Sanzo is impossibly old and impossibly crafty.)

I sometimes wonder if there is or should be a way of turning off the commentary if you don't feel it adds, because if I do a bunch of these, I don't want to deface a large percentage of the MF video on YouTube.

I'd enjoy seeing Zhu versus Cassarà - it seems to be a very awkward bout, with neither fencer really enjoying themself. I'm curious as to sort of what might be behind that.

I would argue that Sanzo v McGuire is sort of redundant, as it's fairly easy to catch what he's doing on some level. Perhaps a short lead in to say, an Ota v Sanzo commentary with some mention of his rather unique approach, but the round of 16 bout is pretty repetitive.

    Just my thoughts

thanks again for running the commentaries.

commentaries can be turned off by hitting the button in the lower right of the screen. however i dont think there will be anymore commentaries for the time being, in any weapon, while our site is getting organized

I think the bronze medal bout (Zhu vs. Sanzo) was one of the best bouts of the day, maybe you could set that bout up with a commentary on Sanzo vs. Ota and Zhu vs. Cassara' to get a feel for Sanzo's craftiness and Zhu's explosiveness. Not to be greedy or anything...

Also, all of those bouts were 15-14, with the winner of each bout coming back from a deficit after their opponent scored their 14th touch. Each bout had noticeable shifts in momentum and very clean fencing (unlike the kruse-joppich bout you mentioned). I think Zhu's bouts are especially exciting because of the support from the Chinese crowd.

And lastly, it seemed as if a majority of the men's foil bouts that were decided by one touch were one by the fencer making a comeback. Ota comes back from 14-13 on Choi (KOR). McGuire came back from 3 or 4 touches on Or (ISR). The exceptions were Sanzo vs. LePechoux and Joppich vs. Kruse.

I'd definitely like to see some Sanzo stuff, I really enjoyed his semi against Ota, and getting an extra level of depth to that can only be good.
On top of that, a comparison with Zhu's style too would be super too

Would it be possible to do the commentary audibly? I hate tryign to read and watch the bout at the same time, but I enjoy the commentary. Also I don't like that the written commentary sometimes blocks out footwork at key moments. So if possible, I would love audio commentary! As for the bouts, I am a big fan of Sanzo, Jopich (spl?) and Cassara for foil.

audio commentaries cant be turned off so there will be no audio commentaries because people who dont want them cant get rid of them without turning off the sound. although if people dont like that comments obscure the action we can try to put them at times that dont cover important footwork

I've been trying to be pretty good about never obscuring action with comments. The general watching behavior I had in mind was that you would watch the fencing, notice that there's a comment going on, pause, read the comment, and then keep going. That's what I do when I watch the other two weapons' commentary. Also, comments are often between halt and fence.

And, on top of all that, my voice is high and annoying.

One thing that might be helpful is if the full text of the commentary (maybe with the associated video times included) was also posted in the info section alongside the video. That way, the viewer could refer back to previous comments, and get a sense of the big picture of the bout, without having to rewind and fast-forward through the video looking for a specific moment.

Thanks again for doing this. Going along with what others have said, Zhu-Cassara or Zhu-Sanzo seem like possibly interesting bouts for a future commentary.
