Summer Nationals - Travel, Hotel & Venue Information Well since qualifiers are almost over and the April NAC has passed, time for a Summer Nationals thread.
Has anyone gotten a discount on United fares using the USOC travel discount program advertised on the USFA website? (Though American Airlines has approximately 80% of the market into DFW. Southwest flies into Love Field.) http://usfencing.org/content/index/6111
There have been comments in other threads about shuttle service available from the Gaylord Texan Resort. Here is information from the resort's website:
Directions and Transportation
Transportation Services http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylord...ion/index.html
Pricing for Gaylord Texan Transportation
• Arrivals from DFW Airport: $52*
• Departure to DFW Airport: $38*
• Arrivals from Love Field: $67*
• Departure to Love Field: $57*
*Pricing is for the first two passengers, plus just $5 for each additional passenger.
When taking Super Shuttle, please plan for a one-hour trip each way between the resort and the airport. Upon arrival to the airport you must use the phones in Baggage Claim to call Super Shuttle for pickup.
Pricing for Super Shuttle Shared Rides
• DFW Airport: $12 per person
• Love Field: $22 per person
Google maps lists the closest grocery store as being 1.2 miles from the resort, a 16 minute walk with missing sidewalks and pedestrian paths.

Google maps lists the closest grocery store as being 1.2 miles from the resort, a 16 minute walk with missing sidewalks and pedestrian paths. Things are looking bleak. According to http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Grapevine there are shuttles to/from the resort and main street and the mall. According to a post on another thread, these shuttles are not free. I cannot find anything about them on the Resort website. The prices quoted above are for airport/resort shuttles. Seems like renting a car at airport and dropping it off at the resort (after stocking up at the local grocery stores) and vice-versa on return would be a cheaper option than the airport shuttle. Hertz claims to have a rental office at the resort. -
On the same page for airport shuttle information on the Gaylord Texan Resort under transportation services is this:
Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center offers first-class transportation services with an emphasis on service. Call (817) 778-2277 or book online.
Whether you need a ride to DFW Airport, are going out for the evening, or have a stop to make anywhere in the metroplex—Gaylord Texan Transportation department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for individuals and groups.
The shuttle service is not free. For example, a trip to the local grocery store will cost $12.00 each way.

For those driving and/or renting cars, parking is $12.99 per night.

Array At the North Texas Divisionals this weekend, I found out that the Gaylord is already full during Summer Nationals. I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and have an idea of other places to stay not too far from the venue. Here are some of them:
Great Wolf Lodge--it's right across the street from the Gaylord and is an indoor ski resort--pricey, though
Homewood Suites
SpringHill Suites--almost brand new
Comfort Suites
If you have any questions or need any help finding a place, you can PM me here or email me at kseiler@hotmail.com “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.” . Louis Pasteur -

Array It would probably be best to rent a car while you're here. The only thing near the Gaylord is....the Gaylord. If you want to see some of the sights, you're going to need you own transportation if you don't want to keep paying for a shuttle to take you places. “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.” . Or you can rent an RV or cabin and stay here: http://vineyardscampground.com/tour.html
20 minute walk to the Gaylord. -

Array Can't afford a hotel? On another note, some of us here in the area are trying to find a way to host fencers FOR FREE. That's right, a FREE place to stay. I can't guarantee to find you something more than a couch or a spot on someone's floor, but we know that a lot fencers are hurting because of the recession. We want you to be able to come to Texas for Summer Nationals. If that means begging our fencers to let you stay with them, we'll try to arrange it.
Things you would get:
--a place to lay your weary head--maybe on a floor in a sleeping bag, but someplace
--access to a shower/tub and a bathroom
--access to laundry facilities
--friendly Texas hospitality
Things you would provide:
--transportation for yourself to and from the airport
--transportation for yourself to and from the venue
--meals for yourself
--gratitude toward your Texan host(s)
If the only thing keeping you from coming to Summer Nationals is the cost of a hotel, let me know by PM or by emailing me at kseiler@hotmail.com. I'll do what I can to make sure you can get a place to sleep. “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.” . Louis Pasteur -

From the website, these prices appear to be for the Gaylord's car service, not the cost of a cab, which elsewhere they say is about $20 from the airport. They also mention a $12 Super Shuttle fare, as well. -

I would like to see this type of cooperation and help extended also at other NACs and JOs. It saves money and hopefully builds lasting friendship as well.
Bravo! -
Summerfield Suites in Irving approximately 7 miles away 149.00 a night for a 2 bedroom suite including full breakfast. Oakwood Corporate apartments 132.00 a night for a 2 bedroom apartment. Located in both Grapevine and Irving. They will only accept reservations 30 days out.

I'm staying at the Residence Inn near DFW. -

MAN... For half a day yesterday, Expedia (U.S. Air) had air from LA to Dallas for $104. With fees, 3 RT tickets were $439.20. Unfortunately, by the time I was available later in the day to actually buy it, lowest ticket was $239 ($717 RT for 3 tickets). Still cheap, but....
Maybe what I thought was an urban myth that airlines release tickets after Midnight Wed. (i.e., early morning Wed) is true...

Maybe what I thought was an urban myth that airlines release tickets after Midnight Wed. (i.e., early morning Wed) is true... Yes, I saw those on US Airways too. $52.00 for a one way return changing planes in Phoenix. I wonder what the fare was from Phoenix to Dallas. -
