Array Portland NAC Has anyone found any good last-minute hotel deals?
Does anyone have good local restaurant/shopping/tourist recommendations? -

Array Free at a friend's house
For local shopping/restaurants Hawthorne Blvd is not too far from the convention center and has a lot of restaurants and little local shops. Powell's books downtown is an experience in its own right. It's a huge used book store. (www.powells.com). There is a farmers market Saturday and Sunday mornings in two different locations (www.portlandfarmersmarket.org). As for the more touristy options, I can't really help because I don't generally do those things in Portland. -

Array Hotwire that. The best for opaque fares. You should find something for $70 downtown no problem. Near the airport there are things as low as $48 Everyone relax cause I got it.... -
i got a room at a place a block down the street from the venue at about $55/night base rate. -

Array Rock Bottom Brew Pub at 2nd & Morrison. Right off the MAX line from the Convention Center. Just follow the armorers... "Sometimes we, as coaches, get into that dictator mode where you just tell and you don't listen and you don't try to understand them." Tom Izzo, Mich. St.

The Doubletree is offering Merry Maker Weekend rates with full breakfast included for $98.00.

Array The Convention Center is part of the downtown fareless square for the TriMet public transportation system so any trip from the venue to downtown and vice versa is free. Grab the red line light rail into town to check out the waterfront park, Powells City of books, the pearl district and the music scene. The trimet website has a solid trip planner that is easy to use.
The travelportland website is a good resource for finding places to stay and things to do. The city also has a free weekly that lists what's happening in the arts and entertainment.
The weather should be pretty nice this weekend. -
"McMenamins", a local pub chain, makes a considerable variety of beers. Some pubs offer hotel rooms.
"McMenamins on Broadway", "Ringler's", and the "Mission Theater" are all fairly close to the Convention Center.
The "Lucky Labrador Brew Pub" at 915 SE Hawthorne, and the "East Bank Saloon and Restaurant" are other possiblities.
Pubs are smoke-free now, and most welcome children until 10 pm.
"Taverns", on the other hand, are 21 and over only. Most have a few good local brews, but the food offerings tend to be more limited. They're smoke-free, too.

Array McMenamins is mediocre, but they are local. Rogue is better as is Bridgeport (on Hawthorne), but both are a bit more expensive too. -

Array From another local:
- For the best selection of beer around (200 local and overseas brews), and an ice trough running around the bar to keep it cold, Henry's - 12th and Burnside.
- For seafood, best in the city is Jakes Crawfish, a half-block away at 12th and Stark. Happy hour food at the bar is a steal. Jakes also has an excellent Scotch selection at lower prices than most local bars.
- For the best jazz venue in the northwest, Jimmy Mak's - 10th and Davis.
- For a stunning view of Portland and excellent food, The City Grille, top of big pink, at Broadway, just off Burnside.
- For an old-fashioned steakhouse and great beef, the Ringside - 22nd and Burnside.
- For "Irish" beer and a burger, Kells.
- McMenamins pubs are notable mostly for B&B's, cheap beer-and-a-burger-and-a-movie venues, and OK beer. For better local brews and better burgers, try Widmer Brewery, near the Colliseum - I'm a big fan of their Hefeweisen.
- Lots of good asian food varieties here - too many to list. There are a number of them on NW 23rd and 21st within a few blocks of Burnside.
BTW, Powell's bills itself as the world's largest New and Used bookstore, and is well worth the visit - you might catch an author's signing, which is de rigeur for authors visiting the Northwest.
On your off hours, you can rent a Segway - a great way to tour the downtown waterfront area.
Enjoy Portland,
Rick

Array A few other good picks for better-than-burgers dining - some of my favorites:
- Wildwood - best of Northwest local ingredients
- Oba - high-end Mexican
- Andina - Peruvian, for something a little different
- The Veritable Quandary - high-end pub food in a business atmosphere with an outdoor patio
- Marrakesh - Moroccan food and belly-dancers
- Masu - high-end sushi $$$$
- Yuki - smaller Japanese restaurant
- Kenny & Zukes - authentic NY-style Deli food
- El Gaucho - Steak and occasional sightings of Blazers players
- Ruth's Chris' Steakhouse - expense-account $$$$$ steak
If all else fails, wander - Portland is a very compact town, with much of the entertainment and dining district centered around the northwest and southwest downtown quadrant, and few unsafe areas there. The blocks are 20 to the mile, so addresses are close together. Burnside is the E-W center street. NW 21st and 23rd streets are a Berkeley-like dining and shopping area. Pioneer Square has Nordstroms, the theater district, and other high-end hotels and shopping.
