Ok next thing I have heard is that the Sunday Times (UK) magazine this Sunday 20th are running an article about fencing. They interview Steve Paul who I think worked on this movie and forget the maddona bit as being the only fencing in the movie. There are meant to be "real" fencing sequences contained within the film.
Note for Overseas fencers even if you can a copy of the Sunday Times I don't think you can get the supplements as they don't ship them to cut down the weight.
Article was there in the Style magazine in the fitness section. Interview with steve was reduced to a comment. Talked about fencing being trendy! and fashionable sport to get into. If you have thrown out your copy give me your email address and I might be able to send you a PDF copy. I would post it here but the Sunday Times might get upset.
OK i am going to post the article with this message and just remember this is from the sunday times style magazine
Enjoy
P.S. being a newbie on this site it seems not to accept PDF's Mabye Craig can let me know how to post a PDF or I will convert to an image format tomorrow
Madonna didn't fence at all. If she did, it ended on the editing room floor. I suspect, based on the way the story was fleshed out in the movie, she would have done some coaching and fencing prior to Jimmy Bond's arrival to the salle. It wouldn't have made sense to show her giving lessons or coaching after Bond's arrival, at least not to make the story work.
I was really happy to see as much fencing as there was in the new Bond movie. There's a medium-length scene in which characters sport fence, using more or less proper form. They're not very good, but only we fencers will notice that. It's followed by a more Hollywood-traditional fencing scene with much slashing and destruction of scenery, but even that part has some neat twists. Madonna never fences.
There was a scene that I saw, and which was edited out of the movie, where Madonna fenced her pupil, Rosamund Pike (Miranda Frost). The scene began in a very similar manner that the duel (how else would you call it) between Brosnan (Bond) and Stephens (Graves). Madonna and Pike are fencing epee, the action becomes more contested, the guards collide (epees pointing to the ceiling), infighting is broken, one gets disarmed, and starts grabbing any weapon that conviniently is at reach, they crash the place. The clip was shown in national TV when Larry King interviewed Madonna. Clearly, from the small role that Madonna played in the movie, her acting skills are more limited than the rest of the cast.
Part of it is in the music video, but it was more elaborate. I guess will have to wait for the DVD.
Maybe. we'll also get an audio commentary/explanation on why Anderson decided to choreograph the duel in the manner he did... not that there will be a rational explanation
