| Need some help on my Uhlmann jacket I recently purchased a World Cup FIE 2002 800N Uhlmann jacket and I wanted to know what the best way to wash it and take care of it would be. The English directions state to not put it in a dryer but wash it on delicate cycle, while the French directions state to not put it in a spin washer. Don't all washers spin dry their load before you stick them in the dryer? Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how to best wash and take care for this jacket? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

| Dumping it into a laundry bag then into the washing machine should do the trick........ it is better to air dry it then spin dry.... i think the main gripe is that the elastic parts get worn out that all.

| I have two sets of FIE kits (both Allstar - one "Athens", one "Startex"). I was both in the washing machine at 40'C on a normal wash. I use biological washing powder (since neither sets of kits have Kevlar in them) and some fabric conditioner (not that it keeps my kit smelling nice for long...). I then hang them up to dry in the "airing cupboard" (in case this doesn't transalte into American, an airing cupboard is a cupboard with the central heating boiler in it - so nice and warm, but not in direct contact with the boiler). I was the Athens kit once a week and the Startex kit each time after I use it (I only use it for competitions).
Hope this helps.

| Won't argue the wisdom of using the washing machine, but normally a good soak in cold or warm water will do the trick. I have used a tablespoon of Woolite and ammonia mixed in, too. Most importantly DO NOT wring the water out of it. Just let it dry naturally. My $.02.

My $.02. | That sounds remarkably similar to the process of washing a lamee.

| Just machine wash on normal cycle w/ warm water, then hang dry. One additional tip for FIE jackets is, every few washings, to pre-apply some detergent directly to the more odor- or dirt- prone areas of the jackets (e.g., the underarm). The synthetic fabrics used in most FIE uniforms don't absorb detergent from the water as readily as cotton, and so after a while may not come out of the wash fully "fresh n' clean" without periodic pre-treating.

| Fasten the velcro firmly and unclip the groin strap if you are using a washer with a spin cycle. |

| I have an Uhlmann World Cup and Uhlmann Olympia uniform mix. Neither have any stretch fabric except at the cuffs of the jacket and bottom hem of the pants. It's kind of misnomer to call the Olympia the stretch material version because it's not, or at least a wee bit more than the World Cup version. So, I wash it in a washing machine with normal detergent.
I hand wash my lames although I've machine washed one once. The lame comes out shinier than when you bought it. But, it's not recommended. |
